Governor signs bills that expand death row execution methods, concealed carry

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry approved 11 bills Tuesday, including expanding death row execution methods, concealed carry of a gun without a permit and legislation that effectively eliminates parole for most jailed in the future.

Legislators adjourn special session on crime

Legislators adjourned the second extraordinary session of 2024, called by Gov. Jeff Landry to focus on crime, last week six days before its scheduled deadline. More than a dozen bills were approved by both chambers and are headed to Landry’s desk for signature.

Lacassine falls to Bulldogs in quarters

LACASSINE — The No. 3 seed Lacassine High Cardinals took a hard hit as they failed to qualify for the Division V LHSAA Boys semifinal round after an intense competition against the No. 6 seed Gibsland-Coleman High Bulldogs Friday night at John Juneau Gymnasium. The quarterfinal game would go into overtime with a buzzer beater 3-point shot by the Cards. Lacassine left it all on the court but came up short to Gibsland-Coleman at the end by a final score of 67-64.

Diamond Dogs knock off Lake Arthur, 8-1

The Jennings Diamond Dogs picked up their fifth win of the season on Monday when they took care of parish foe Lake Arthur by a final of 8-1. The two teams played each other again on Tuesday afternoon in Lake Arthur in a two-day doubleheader. The Dogs pounded out nine hits in their win over the Tigers, while pitcher Tyler Guidry dealt over his seven innings of complete-game baseball. Guidry went seven frames and allowed only one run on five hits, while walking only one and striking out a pair.
