For those not involved with or formally trained in military procedures, understanding the various medals awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces, foreign allies or even occasionally civilians, can be daunting. These awarded medals signify sacrifices over and above the first sacrifice — to serve one’s country. The highest awards are extremely rare and represent heroism, gallantry and service involving risk of one’s life, for actions ‘above and beyond the call of duty’.
