Our original mailbox has been on life support for more than a year.

About a decade ago, I painted it to match our house and I wasn’t anxious to repeat that process again. Instead, I periodically added dirt to secure its moorings, always handled it gingerly and repeatedly coaxed the latch into closing securely so the mail inside wouldn’t get wet. To shore up the latch, rubber bands were retrieved from bunches of broccoli; they’re the perfect size and often a good color. Everyone should eat more broccoli so the mailbox kept us healthy.

Preparing homemade cakes is an endeavor that families can enjoy together. Baking is a popular holiday tradition in many families, and few cake styles are as recognized as the Bundt cake.

The Bundt® pan was created in 1950 by H. David Dahliquist, the founder of the Minneapolis-based Nordic Ware kitchen products manufacturer. The shape was inspired by a traditional European cake known as kugelhopf. The design creates a hole in the center of the cake, which enables a heavy, dense cake to be baked without risk of the center being undone.

The home of Linda Patterson at 514 Lucy Street has been selected as the November residential Garden of the Month. The award is given by the Jennings Garden Club.
