New Zealand recovers 6 bodies days after volcanic eruption

WHAKATANE, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand military specialists recovered six bodies from a small volcanic island Friday days after an eruption claimed at least eight other lives and left a toxic and volatile landscape. The eight specialists wearing protective clothing and using breathing apparatuses landed by helicopter and found six of the bodies thought to remain on White Island since the eruption Monday. The bodies were airlifted to a ship near the island off New Zealand’s eastern coast where scientists and other police and military personnel monitored the risky operation.

JDSO hosts annual DARE Role Model Luncheon

The Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) hosted the semiannual DARE Role Model Luncheon at a local restaurant in Jennings.

The luncheon was held for high school students who exhibited exemplary examples for DARE graduates during the fall 2019 semester for the fifth graders at Welsh Elementary School (WES), Our Lady Immaculate (OLI), Lacassine High School (LHS), Elton Elementary School (EES) and Fenton Elementary School (FES).

The business garden of the month for December went to Main Street Antiques and Interiors (above). Pictured is owner Polly Smith. The Jennings Garden Club selected Tim and Renata Guinn (below) as the December residential garden of the month. The garden is located at their home on Plaquemine Street.

Students Donate to Animal Shelter

Welsh students Heidi Williamson, 9, and Emily Davidson, 11, are helping support the animals at Jennings Animal Shelter. The girls collected blankets to keep the dogs warm during the winter months. Now the girls are working on collecting dog food for the shelter’s residents. Donations can be brought to the Welsh Library.

If you are playing host for this year’s holiday festivities, you deserve an award. I could never do it, and I commend you for your bravery.

Canine and feline family members often attend these parties as well. While we’re gorging ourselves on cookies and mashed potatoes, it’s important to remember that there are those with 40-times greater scent skills hanging around too.
