I’M JUST SAYIN’
“Smith, 34.”
Those two items caught my eye as I scrolled through the New York Times piece that detailed the lives of the five victims murdered in the Capital Gazette newsroom.
You see, I am “Smith, 34” in a way. I am a Smith. I am 34 years old. I work at a newspaper, in the newsroom. I wasn’t really the Smith 34 in question, though. Rebecca Smith, 34, was. She was hired as a sales assistant by the Gazette in November.
“Was.” Past tense.
When a gunman stormed that newsroom Thursday, he took down Smith and four of her colleagues.
