NEW ORLEANS (AP) — U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is wrapping up a southern tour by visiting two public charter schools in New Orleans.

DeVos brought her “Rethink School” tour to New Orleans on Friday.

DeVos visited Edward Hynes Charter School to observe what it calls “academically rich, innovative programs.”

Her schedule also included a stop at the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy where she was scheduled to take part in a discussion and learn about the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps.

FEDS DESIGNATE 2 NATURAL DISASTER AREAS IN LOUISIANA

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Two Louisiana parishes are eligible for disaster assistance as a result of a recent drought.

Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, in a news release Thursday, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture declared Caddo and DeSoto parishes are contiguous to primary natural disaster areas in Texas. The Farm Service Agency says livestock producers may have suffered grazing losses in those areas and as a result are eligible for low-interest emergency loans from the FSA provided requirements are met.

Town hall meeting to aid vets

A Jennings native is organizing a meeting Wednesday to assist veterans who need to file disability claims, appeals or have questions about the Veterans Affairs hospitals or clinics.

Organizer and Jennings native Ginger Reiley, who currently lives in Houma, said she got the idea to hold the town hall meeting after attending a similar event for veterans in Houma with her fatherin-law.

CADA ‘Taste n’ Tell’ event set for Oct. 16

It’s that time of year again. Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) will be hosting their “Taste n’ Tell” fundraiser event to raise funds to help them provide a safe environment and guidance for survivors of domestic abuse.

“Taste n’ Tell” is CADA’s premier fundraising event, and is being held at the Grand Marais Courtyard, located at 919 North Lake Arthur Ave.at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Tickets can be purchased for $20 each at the door.

A number of fair contests were held this week, including Thursday’s JDP Fair Queen pageant. Caroline Doise (pictured) of Elton was crowned at the event while three other young ladies also earned awards. Macy Fuselier of Elton was named Miss Congeniality, Hannah Sonnier of Hathaway was named Second Runner-Up, and First Runner-Up went to Abbigail Broussard of Lake Arthur. During that event, first-place winners of Wednesday’s talent show entertained the crowd.
