Attorneys general asking DEA to tighten drug manufacture

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Attorneys general from West Virginia and 10 other states are asking the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to further tighten the manufacture of opioids.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey’s office says the DEA’s preliminary quotas for 2019 don’t reflect the federal agency’s position that demand shouldn’t be equated with legitimate need. He said he believes the proposed quotas are still excessive, even with a 10 percent reduction.

Homes on HHS land to be sold

HATHAWAY - Two homes located on land recently purchased for the high school here are being sold to be moved.

The school board approved proposals Thursday to declare as surplus property two residential buildings located at 4049 and 4065 Pine Island Highway, directly south of Hathaway High School. Only the structures are being sold, not land.

The board is accepting sealed bids on each house. If the board accepts a bid, the buyers must remove the structure at their own expense within 60 days.

Alumni band is back this year after a decade-long hiatus thanks to a group of Jennings High School (JHS) graduates and a director that they say inspired them to exceed their potential, whose influence is still at work on her former students today.

The alumni band will be returning to Jerry Simmons Stadium and joining the JHS Pride of Jennings in the stands during the homecoming game against Westlake on Friday, Oct. 12.

Welsh High School senior Isabel Hoffpauir was crowned Homecoming Queen Friday night at the school’s festivities. Hoffpauir is the daughter of Donald and Tricia Kaye Hoffpauir.

Police jury to decide on GIS agreement

A geographic information system (GIS) will soon open a new window into the way the parish analyzes data in Jeff Davis Parish.

Next week, Jeff Davis police jurors will vote on an agreement with several other entities in the parish to split the startup cost of $67,010 for 2018. This would allow the entities to implement a new mapping system that is expected to make management of deeds and legal documents concerning land more accurate and efficient.

The 2018 fall series of Turn It Up Tuesdays concerts kicks off this week in downtown Jennings, with Jamie Bergeron on the stage from 6-8 p.m. The concerts are held in Founder’s Park and are free to attend. People are invited to bring their lawn chairs and are able to bring their own food and drinks. There will be concessions that can be purchased there as well.
