Sowela Technical Community College cut the ribbon on the new Morgan Smith campus in Jennings at on Thursday, with hundreds turning out to commemorate the occasion.

The new facility on North Sherman Street in Jennings will allow SOWELA to expand instructional programs and services throughout Jeff Davis Parish and the surrounding communities.

“The new Jennings campus and facility was truly a community project from the very beginning,” said SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall.

Registration opens for Chamber golf tournament

Golfers of all ages are invited to come out to swing in support of local businesses throughout the parish.

Registration is now open for the Jeff Davis Parish Chamber of Commerce’s annual Golf Scramble in October. The Chamber is holding their annual fundraising event at the Jennings Golf Course starting at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19.

Teams of three are invited to register for the 2018 Chamber Golf Tournament for an entry fee of $375 per team. The entry fee includes green fees, driving range, use of a golf cart, and lunch, with food and beverages offered throughout the course.

DEPUTY’S ACTIONS SAVE MAN’S LIFE

A deputy with the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) recently responded to a call, saving a man’s life.

On Friday morning, August 31, Assistant Shift Supervisor Deputy Brant Duplechain of Hathaway was manning the sheriff’s office Lacassine substation when a call came in regarding an auger-related injury at a nearby rice dryer. Dispatchers reported the incident was just less than two miles from where Duplechain was located.

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana will have a surplus topping $300 million from the last budget year when the final numbers are settled next month, the state’s treasurer said Friday.

Authorities said an estimated 8,000 people were displaced at the height of Thursday’s post-explosion chaos in three towns north of Boston that were rocked by the disaster. Most were still waiting, shaken and exhausted, to be allowed to return to their homes.
