JDN details campaign coverage rules

Friday marked the final day of qualifying for the November 6 primary and candidates across the parish and state are beginning to campaign.

Jennings Daily News (JDN) would like all candidates and the public to be familiar with the newspaper’s campaign coverage guidelines that will be observed for this election.

Musical instrument drive inspired by student’s story

MONROE (AP) — Isaiah Jones didn’t know that talking about his struggle to find a musical instrument could inspire people to help other students.

Jones, 18, was active at Strauss Theatre when his director asked him to do an interview with the Arts Council of Northeast Louisiana. He told Community Development Coordinator Danielle Kelley Tolbird about being in the band at Carroll High School and how he wished there was more funding for the arts.

WPD arrests wanted sex offender

A sex offender wanted in several states was arrested in Welsh on Wednesday.

Jerry Bolish, 51, was arrested and is being held in the Welsh jail awaiting extradition.

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday detectives with the Welsh Police Department received several complaints about a suspicious man. During their investigation police located the man near Sportsman Park, Police Chief Marcus Crochet said.

Soaring temps, humidity bring dangerous heat in South

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Scorching heat was spreading Friday across much of the South, where temperatures are expected to soar over 100 degrees (37.8 Celsius) and persist into next week.

The National Weather Service posted heat advisories and warnings from the New Mexico-Texas border eastward to parts of Alabama. Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi and west Tennessee were all under heat advisories or warnings Friday.

Death toll from Missouri duck boat accident climbs to 17

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — Divers found four more bodies Friday in a Missouri lake where a duck boat packed with tourists capsized and sank in high winds, bringing the death toll to 17 in the country-and-western town of Branson, authorities said.

Investigators blamed stormy weather for the accident Thursday evening on Table Rock Lake. Winds at the time were blowing as hard as 65 mph (105 kph), according to the National Weather Service.

Stocks waver, dollar slips as traders shrug off trade talk

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are little changed Friday as traders shrug off the latest trade threats from President Donald Trump and focus on company earnings reports, which contained some betterthan-expected results from big names including Microsoft. Banks are rising along with interest rates and high-dividend companies are slipping.

Second property sought for HHS

HATHAWAY - The school board is moving forward with plans to buy a second piece of property here along Pine Island Hwy.

The board unanimously agreed during a Thursday meeting to authorize Superintendent of Schools Kirk Credeur make an offer to enter into a buy-sell agreement with the owners of 4065 Pine Island Hwy., the site of about an acre of land directly south of Hathaway High. Last month, the board gave Credeur the same authorization to purchase about an acre of land and home located at 4049 Pine Island Hwy.

Trump heightens tariff threat in China trade war

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday escalated his threats to punish China for its trade policies, warning anew that he’s prepared to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports and arguing that Beijing has manipulated its currency at the expense of the United States.

In a taped interview with the business channel CNBC, Trump warning, “I’m willing to go to 500,” meaning he’s prepared ultimately to impose tariffs on $500 billion in Chinese imports — roughly the value of all the goods Beijing shipped to the United States last year.

NY Times: Trump was recorded talking of paying Playboy model

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer secretly recorded Trump discussing payments to a former Playboy model who said she had an affair with him, The New York Times reported Friday.

The president’s current personal lawyer confirmed the conversation and said it showed Trump did nothing wrong, according to the Times.

Merkel: German gov’t is solid despite migration fight

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged Friday that a bitter fight over migrant policy hurt Germans’ confidence in her government, but said she never thought of quitting and insisted that her administration is doing solid work.

Merkel’s fourth-term government took office in March after a sixmonth effort to put together a new governing coalition. So far, it has been remarkable chiefly for the spat within Merkel’s own two-party conservative bloc that threatened to bring down the administration earlier this month.
