Dealing with lawn clippings

As if mowing the lawn wasn’t trouble enough, dealing with and disposing of grass clippings is a major pain. Clumps of grass clippings left on the lawn are unsightly and yellow the grass beneath them. And if you have a bagging attachment on your mower, handling the grass clippings extends the chore of mowing by requiring extra time and effort to repeatedly empty the bag. Once clippings are put in garbage bags and placed on the curb, our municipal waste handlers must deal with them.

Knights honor members, families

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS

During the June meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Jennings, several members were recognized.

The family of Johnny and Linda Miller (above, at left) was recognized as Family of the Month for May. Sadly, Johnny passed away Sunday, June 24. He was active in fundraisers conducted by the Knights that supported charitable works. As the KC hall manager, he coordinated the hall’s rental, upkeep and maintenance.

Woods speaks at Rotary Club meeting

The Jennings Rotary Club guest speaker for the June 26 meeting was Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ivy Woods, who was accompanied by Chief Deputy Chris Ivey and Elton Police Chief Bruce Lemelle. The sheriff gave an update on the number of calls received by his office since January, the purchase of a site adjacent to the new jail to serve as an administrative building and an update on the progress of the new jail. Pictured (left to right) are Woods, Rotary president Rick Parker, Lemelle and Ivey.

Veterans Home garden planted in honor of late resident

On March 25, Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home (SWLVH) resident Norman Briggs, who lived at the home with his wife Betty, died. To honor the beloved resident the activities department at the home decided to honor him with a tribute garden.

It had started to die when it was planted in March, but is it is now in full bloom.

The garden, which they call “Briggs Garden,” contains purple and yellow irises, cana and day lillies, hosta, peppermint and vincia and is located around the home’s flagpoles.

Police: Newspaper gunman planned deadly attack carefully

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The gunman accused of killing five people in a vendetta against a Maryland newspaper barricaded the rear exit to prevent anyone from escaping and blasted his way through the newsroom with a pump-action shotgun, cutting down one victim trying to slip out the back, authorities said Friday.
