Born on Sept. 14, 1943, in Jennings, Chuck was the third of eight children welcomed into the lives of W. Dunham Smith, Sr., and Kathryn Peterson Smith. He was a 1961 graduate of Jennings High School and a retired TSGT of the United States Air Force with 20-plus years of service.
He served his country with honor. Chuck was able to see a lot of the country and other parts of the world while serving tours in Vietnam, Thailand and Germany. He was a man of his own making. He was a good person with a big heart, and he shared that love with those closest to him.
After Chuck retired, he agreed to stay in Jennings for a while to assist our dad with working on the “ole” house, putting his own life on hold. As it turned out, he would never leave with the aging and illnesses of our parents. Our gratitude is overflowing for the care and security he provided for them prior to their deaths.
He could always be seen working in his yard, having raised many a garden to which people still remember him as the “cucumber” man. We loved him with all our hearts and will miss him dearly! Chuck is survived by four sisters, Kathryn (Kay) Ward
Chuck is survived by four sisters, Kathryn (Kay) Ward of Lake Charles, Patricia Voorhies of Shreveport, M. Suzanne Smith of Lake Charles and Marilyn (Lowell) Fulton of Youngsville, who is also his godchild, along with his nephew, Henry Clay Ward III; three brothers, W. Dunham (Suzie) Smith, Jr., of Lafayette, Jerrold (Jerry and Loretta) Smith of Lake Charles and Francis (Frank and Denise) Broussard-Smith of Lafayette.
Chuck was always the “silly, fun-loving” uncle to his 23 nephews and nieces, and they supplied him with 49 (one in the oven) great-nieces and nephews and nine (one in the oven) great great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his paternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Morgan (Harriet Sweeney) Smith; maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. George (Catherine Clark) Peterson; brothers-in-law Darrell Clark Ward and Henry Charles Voorhies IV; nephews Brian and Stan Smith; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
We wish to thank Sandra Mann, Winter Fontenot, Jeri Crochet and Sonia Conner for the care they provided our brother at a time when he could no longer care for himself. This allowed him to continue to live in his home the last 20 or so days prior to his admission to the SWLA Veterans Home in Jennings.
An extra special thanks goes out to Kim Romero for working him into her busy schedule, starting after hurricanes Laura and Delta and at a time of decline in his journey with Parkinson’s disease. Kim, he nor we could have done it without you!
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Disabled Veterans, The Wounded Warriors or St. Jude’s Hospital in his name.
