Dr. Lynn James Myers
A Mass of Christian Burial for Lynn James Myers will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jennings.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings today, Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, from 4-9 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume Saturday, Dec. 31, from 8 a.m. until the time of his funeral mass.
Burial will immediately follow in Calvary Cemetery. Lynn James Myers was born on Aug. 24, 1936, in Jennings. He died Dec. 26, 2022, in Richmond, Texas.
He graduated from Lake Arthur High School in 1954. He received a bachelor of science degree in dairy production from LSU in 1958.
He married Verna Courville on June 8, 1958. He was employed by LSU Agricultural Extension Service as an associate county agent in Abbeville from 1959 to 1963.
He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas A&M in 1967, graduating with high honors and at the top of his class. He received a master’s degree in clinical pathology in 1971. He was employed by Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine as an assistant professor from 1967 to 1973.
In 1973, he went into private practice and owned and operated Jefferson City Veterinary Clinic in Port Arthur, Texas, until 1996 when he sold his practice and retired, moving back to Jennings.
During his years in Port Arthur, he was an active member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, serving as a lector and a member of the Parish Council. He then served as president of both the Parent Teachers Organization and the school board of St. Catherine’s School. He was instrumental in starting the St. Catherine’s School Foundation, serving as its president and CEO for the first three years of its operation. He was a charter board member of the Southeast Texas Mardi Gras Association. He was active in the Groves Rotary Club and the Port Arthur Serra Club, serving as Vice President and President of the latter. He was also Cubmaster of St. Catherine’s Cub Scouts. He belonged to St. Catherine’s Knights of Columbus and the Golden Triangle Degree Team of the Knights of Columbus and became a 4th Degree Knight in 1995.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Sensat Myers; his father, Hillias Myers; brother Lawrence, his wife, Verna, and his only son, Bryan.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Myers and her wife Michelle; grandson Christopher Hershey; greatgranddaughter Jaylynn Hershey, five brothers and one sister.
