Dr. Walter Wallace Low, DVM
Dr. Walter Wallace Low, 82, a retired veterinarian, passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024 in Baton Rouge.
Walter was born Feb. 18, 1941 to Asa Zenas Low and Mary Lou Garrett Low in Jennings. He graduated from Jennings High School in 1959 having never missed a day of school in 12 years. Walter attended Centenary College of Louisiana (19591961) for pre-vet courses, then transferred to Texas A&M where he graduated in record time in 1964 with a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He served in the United States Army in Korea and the Republic of Vietnam and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his exemplary service. After his Army years, he worked as a veterinarian for the United States Department of Agriculture in various areas in Louisiana, retiring in Baton Rouge. Walter’s first love was always family, but in his retirement years he enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening and working in his beautiful yard. He was known for cooking a delicious fish dinner, as well as other delicious foods and pies. He was a member of Jefferson Baptist Church in Baton Rouge.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Asa and Mary Lou Low; his sisters, Wanda Marie Low Ferguson and Clara Alice Low Welch, as well as other extended family members.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Mullins Low, a daughter, Susan of Austin, Texas; a son, Brian of Baton Rouge and a stepson, Ashley Oglesby, of Baton Rouge; two dearly loved grandchildren, Harrison of Baton Rouge and Catherine of Austin, Texas; a brother, Henry C. Low of Lubbock, Texas; sisters, Dorothy Low Grimsley of New Iberia and Mary Lou Low Hughes of Bossier City, as well as many nieces, nephews and great, great-great and greatgreat- great nieces and nephews and cousins.
His service was held Jan. 29, 2024 at Jefferson Baptist Church officiated by Dr. David Goza. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park in Denham Springs.
