WELSH - Officials here would like to see how many volunteers are willing to commit before setting any plans for a 2019 Lagniappe Festival in stone.

This year’s event was cancelled because of a lack of volunteers. Aldermen had also asked those willing to serve on a festival planning committee to contact city hall, but only one person stepped forward.

Former alderman Charles Drake, who has spearheaded the Lagniappe Festival for several years, said the biggest task of the threeday event is finding people to man drink booths.

“The games and food booths sort of take care of themselves,” Drake said. “The problem is getting enough people to take turns handling those drink booths and the beer wagon throughout the weekend.”

Drake approached the board of aldermen this week about setting a possible date for a 2019 festival, which would likely be held April 12 of next year.

“Before we plan anything, let’s see if people will be willing to volunteer,” Mayor Carolyn Louviere said.

If interested in volunteering time at the Lagniappe Festival, call city hall at (337) 734-2231.
