Marguerite ‘Peggy’ N. Bertrand Smith
ELTON - Mrs. Peggy Smith, 97, of Elton passed away April 12, 2021.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held today, Thursday, April 15, 2021, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church of Elton, with Father Marshall Boulet officiating.
Visitation was held Wednesday, April 14, 2021, from 4-9 p.m., with a 6 p.m. vigil/rosary led by Deacon Michael Guillory. A remembrance service will follow in Reed Funeral Home of Kinder. Visitation will continue today, Thursday, April 15, 2021, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Paul Catholic Church in Elton.
Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery under the direction of Reed Funeral Home of Kinder.
Mrs. Peggy was a native of Elton, having lived in Lake Charles a number of years. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and an honorary member of Ladies Altar Society. She was a secretary and bookkeeper, having worked for Shell Oil Company, H.L. Allen & Sons and Agriculture Equipment.
Mrs. Peggy was a member of American Legion Auxiliary and a member of China Burial Ground Society, serving as a treasurer and many years as trustee. She was served Woodman of the World Society as trustee. In the early 1940s, she belonged to the organization U.S.O. and the group called Military Maids.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Jay Caldarera and wife Gloria of Kinder, Becky Tholkes and husband Larry of Elton and Charles Caldarera and wife Mary Lou of Moss Bluff; daughter-in-law Wanda Caldarera of Westlake; sister Barbara Deshotel of Elton; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great greatgrandchildren.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Enice Smith; son Max Caldarera, Sr.; grandchild Nicholas Anthony Caldarera; parents Maxiel and Vida Bertrand; and brother Johnny Bertrand.
