Harold Batey Troutman

Harold Batey Troutman passed away at Altus Hospital in Lumberton, Texas, on Aug. 13, 2021, after a short battle with COVID-19.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021, from 6-8 p.m. at Bailey and Foster Funeral Home, at 207 S. Magnolia St. in Palestine, Texas. His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, at the funeral home, followed by a burial next to his wife Beverly at Pilgrim Cemetery in Elkhart, Texas.
“Coach Troutman” as he was known to many students and faculty, was born on March 25, 1950, in Roanoke and was one of 10 brothers and sisters. Harold played basketball for McNeese State University in Louisiana and later moved to Texas, also playing basketball for Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas, and won the “Mr. Panola” award. Harold obtained his bachelor’s degree from East Texas State University (now known as Texas A&M University-Commerce).
Harold married Beverly Ann Walling of Elkhart, Texas, on Dec. 27, 1980 in Rockwall, Texas. They coached and taught together at Rockwall ISD. Together they returned to Elkhart in 1983 to raise their only child, Tyler, as they both joined the staff of Elkhart ISD, where they both served as teacher and coach.
Throughout the years, Harold coached football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis and taught world geography, history and physical education, along with a multitude of other coaching, sports announcing and teaching duties, including bus driving. Harold was able to work his way up the ranks to head varsity basketball coach, where he was able to coach his son Tyler throughout all his years of high school. Basketball was a common bonding activity for Harold and Tyler.
After 24 years of faithful service to their school and community, Beverly and Harold retired in 2007 and moved to Lumberton, Texas, in 2009. After retiring, Harold could be found substitute teaching for Lumberton ISD and Hardin-Jefferson ISD, as well as announcing the school’s sporting events.
Harold is survived by his son, Tyler Troutman, and his wife Melanie Cascia of The Woodlands, Texas, along with Harold’s grandchildren Brody and Ava Troutman; sisters Frances and her husband Edward McCarty of Houma and Mary Kay Epperly of LaPlace; and brothers Leonard and his wife Martha Troutman and Carl Troutman, both of Roanoke. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews to whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle Bro.”
Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Ann Troutman; parents Francis and Irma Troutman; brothers Roy, Kenneth, Don and David Troutman; sister Debra Demarest; as well as sister-in-law RoyNell Troutman and brother-in-law James Epperly.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Eric Troutman, John Troutman, Jim Troutman, Ted Harrod and Glen Lowry.
