JENNINGS — The family of Barbara Mans Hawkins announces her peaceful passage from this life into the presence of the Lord on July 16, 2023.

She was born in Jennings on September 5, 1932 to John Charles Mans and Lois Peebles Mans. Her parents and sister, Eleanor Mae, preceded her in death.

She and her husband Linus T. Hawkins were married July 5, 1960. They remained husband and wife until his passing in 2013.

Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her children Dr. Marshall (Terri) Hawkins and Elizabeth Hawkins (David) Swinson, her grandchild Lesley (Evan) Saucier and two of the world’s most interesting great-grandchildren ever: Miss Evelyn Knox Saucier and Miss Lydia Lucille Saucier. Her eyes always lit up and she smiled whenever Evie and Lydi were mentioned.

Her formal education consisted of Jennings High School graduation in 1949, a degree from Harding College, undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley, a teaching certificate from Louisiana College with post graduate studies at LSU Baton Rouge and McNeese State University in Lake Charles.

Her career included teaching eighth grade science and Home Economics at Midland High School in Midland. She routinely sponsored Future Homemakers of America students in rallies and competitions.

Her hobbies included traveling with her husband, attending Church events, sewing, baking, decorating cakes for birthdays, weddings and events, catering weddings and events and helping to hostess for the Natchez Pilgrimage.

Over the years she owned a world-record number of crazy Pomeranians all named “Happy” as well as one very good boy German Shepherd named “Fritz”.

Visitation will be at 9-10 a.m. on Friday, July 21 at Miguez Funeral Home in Jennings. A brief eulogy will follow visitation. A graveside service will conclude at Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings.

Your presence regularly showed a doubtfilled world exactly WHOSE side you are on.

Also, we thank the folks at Golden Age Nursing Home, especially Mona Guidry, as well as Heart of Hospice, for their excellent care of our mother.
