LACASSINE - The Lacassine Lady Cardinals dominated the recently announced 6-B All-District Girls’ Basketball squad by placing 3 players on the first team, including senior Kassi Thibodeaux being tabbed as the team’s Most Valuable Player. Lady Cardinal Head Coach Jeremy Hollier was also honored by being named the district’s Coach of the Year. The Lady Cardinals claimed yet another 6-B crown and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class B State Playoffs in 2017-18.
Thibodeaux, junior Hannah Kozelski and freshman Vanessa Duhe were all awarded with First team honors, while also being joined by Midland’s Hannah Credeur and Hathaway eighthgrader Jill Fontenot.
Thibodeaux averaged right over 9 points per district contest, but controlled the boards at a whopping 14.2 rebounds per game. On a young Lady Cardinals’ squad, Thibodeaux provided valuable senior leadership down the stretch for Hollier and the Lady Cards. Kozelski, who is a 3-point marksman, proved to be a workhorse for Lacassine scoring the basketball until an ankle injury ended her season towards the back end of league play. The junior still averaged 11 points per game in 6-B play and handed out 4 assists per game. Duhe burst on to the scene as a freshman by being big in the paint for Lacassine. The rookie averaged 11.8 points per game and also yanked down 9.5 rebounds per contest.
Hathaway eighth-grader Jill Fontenot continued to wow audiences after a stellar seventh-grade season a year ago. The junior high student played well beyond her young years in 2017-18 by dropping in 15 points per game and yanking down 7 boards per contest. Look for Fontenot to continue to build on a fantastic year as she still has 4 seasons as a Lady Hornet.
Rounding out the First Team was Credeur of Bell City, who dropped in 11.6 points per game and hauled in 4.9 boards for the Lady Bruins.
Natalie Castaneda of Hathaway and Krissy Broxton Lacassine were the only two Jeff Davis Parish representatives on the Second Team. Castaneda, a senior, dropped in 9.5 points per game and hauled in 7 boards per contest. Broxton, a freshman, chipped in 9.3 points per game for the Lady Cards.
Lacasine placed sophomore Hailey Hoffpauir and Macey Guidry on the Honorable Mention Team, while Hathaway’s Brea Baca-White and Chloey Guidry also earned those honors. Guidry and Hathaway’s Lainey Marshall were selected to the All-Defensive Team in recognition of the efforts on the other end of the floor.
