Officials remind residents of waste regulations
City officials are reminding residents of the new rules and regulations now that that pickup of bulk and yard waste is being offered on a weekly basis.
Following a contract renegotiation with Republic Services of Acadiana, residents can now leave bulky items and yard waste to be picked up every week. Until last month, the service was only offered once per month for limited items.
City Clerk Barbara Lantz said bulky items will be picked up every week on Mondays and Thursdays.
“Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday routes will most likely be picked up on Thursday,” she said. “Thursday and Friday routes will be most likely picked up on Monday.”
Bulky waste includes stoves, refrigerators with all CFC and other refrigerants removed, water tanks, washing machines, furniture and other similar items and materials other than construction debris or large dead animals. Also included in the definition of bulky waste is hazardous waste or stable matter with weights or volumes greater than those allowed for trash containers, which is 50 pounds.
Bulky waste does not include any excluded waste. Excluded waste is defined as all large commercial and industrial refuse, construction debris, large dead animals, institutional solid waste, hazardous waste, offal waste, stable matter and vegetable waste.
Yard waste is considered to be any grass, leaves, flowers, stalks, stems, tree trimmings, branches and tree trunks. Any grass, pine needles, leaves, flowers, stalks, stems and small tree trimmings must be put into a container, bag or box for pickup and the weight of each should not exceed 35 pounds. Larger tree trimmings must be laid neatly in piles at the curbside and tied in bundles.
The maximum weight of any item placed out for yard waste collection should be no more than 50 pounds. Branches up to six inches in diameter should be cut in length not exceeding six feet and be stacked at the curb and tied in bundles. Tree trunks should not exceed 50 pounds for any one piece and no more than four feet in length.
Contractors are required to haul off their own debris, tree trimmings, grass clippings, carpet or other bulky items they may discard.
