Lake Arthur Elementary School recently announced honor roll for the third nine weeks. The following students are included in that list:

Annual LAHS Alumni Softball Tournament scheduled

After graduating high school one of the things that most miss is the opportunity to play high school sports, such as softball. For those people, May 19 will be the day they have been waiting for. The annual Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) Alumni Softball Tournament is just around the corner and is currently searching for teams to play.

The Varsity Club is once again holding the tournament as a fundraiser to give back to LAHS. All funds made during the weekend go directly back to the school’s baseball and softball programs.

Big third inning dooms Cardinals

The No. 9-rankled Fairview Panthers used an 11-run third inning to turn a close contest with the Lacassine Cardinals into a blowout district 6-B win here at Legion Field in Jennings Tuesday night. Errors and free passes, coupled with a pair of bases clearing triples broke open a 3-1 ballgame and ultimately propelled the Panthers to a 18-5 win. In what was a fairly played game besides the third frame, Lacassine starter Mason Hebert shut the Fairview bats down through 2.2 innings until he lost control and the wheels fell off.

Reddick drives in 6 as Astros beat Orioles 10-6

HOUSTON (AP) — A day ago Josh Reddick was pleading for a hit on Twitter after typing “I will get a hit” 13 times in one post worked for St. Louis outfielder Dexter Fowler.

Once Reddick got that first hit out of the way, he busted out in a big way Tuesday night.

Reddick hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and a grand slam in Houston’s five-run seventh, leading the Astros to a 10-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

Should MLB Opening Day be a holiday?

Opening Day in Major League Baseball has come and gone for way over a century, and as every season passes, fans are still clamoring to make the special occasion a national holiday. Yes, it does sound kind of crazy - the fact that some would lump the beginning of a sports season with the likes of such days as President’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day or many more. But for millions of people across this country, the time-honored tradition marks a day that generations of families have shared since the beginning of our National Pastime.

There are a lot of meaningless holidays on our calendars. Sure, you’ve got your standards. Halloween, Easter, April Fools and Christmas, but when we weren’t paying attention either the government orthe people from Big Calendar just started tacking days on.

You’ve probably already missed a few of the important ones. January 12 was national Kiss a Ginger Day. So if you didn’t observe that one properly please show some affection to a redheaded person in your life as soon as possible.

Inspiration and invitation in new film

“They taught me what it really means to be a human person, to love and let the barriers down,” director Randall Wright explains about his experience making “Summer in the Forest,” his new documentary. If there’s someone who has watched this movie about a community of disabled people near Paris and not ben changed, I’ve not met him or her.

“Summer in the Forest” is a moving portrait of L’Arche, a community established in France by Jean Vanier for men and women with intellectual disabilities, which now has outposts around the world.

April is Autism Awareness Month

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that autism spectrum disorder affects 1 in 68 children across the country. This estimate is 30 percent higher than previous reports, which may be indicative of better measuring devices, more people coming forward or a greater prevalence of autism across the board.

Every now and then, I’ll see a story on one of the home-decorating channels about the 13th Lord Pushface, who lives in genteel poverty in Haughty House, a stately 300-room manor in Somethingorothershire.

He inherited the place from the 12th Lord Pushface, who lost all the family’s cash playing craps in Las Vegas in 1973. Lord Willoughby Pushface keeps the place solvent by letting out rooms to tourists and by selling medieval furniture that’s been stored in the attic since the place was last renovated back in 1649.
