MENDOCINO, Calif. (AP) — An SUV carrying a large family from Washington state accelerated straight off a scenic California cliff and authorities said the deadly wreck may have been intentional.

The wreck was discovered last week, days after child welfare authorities began investigating whether the children were being neglected.

Information pulled from the vehicle’s software shows it was stopped at a flat, dirt pull-off area before it sped off the steep rocky face and plunged 100 feet (30 meters), said Capt. Greg Baarts with the California Highway Patrol Northern Division.

District Attorney Michael Cassidy announced the following convictions recently obtained during the criminal petit jury session on March 19 in the 31st Judicial District Court.

April 15-22 is National Volunteer Week, a time for the country to show appreciation for volunteers and volunteer programs and reflect on their importance to communities.

One such volunteer group in Jeff Davis Parish is Volunteers for Family and Community.

Trailblazers are one of three groups from this organization that serves Jeff Davis Parish. Brenda Myers, the reporter for Trailblazers, said the groups tend to focus on five primary educational concerns including environment, literacy, family life, international and marketing.

IOTA - Chloe Smith and Rose Regan combined for 54 of Iota’s 130 points last week to help lead the Lady Bulldogs to the team title in the 2018 Iota Bulldog Relays.

Lake Arthur finished a distant second in the team standings with 60 points and Kinder was third with 56.

Elton tallied 45 points to finish seventh in the field of 14; Welsh was 11th (11) and Jennings was 13th (6).
