Last victims of Harvey finally leave hotels

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The last victims of Hurricane Harvey living in federally-funded hotel rooms are heading to other housing arrangements this weekend, more than 10 months after the storm first hit.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Friday that the final 707 displaced households will move out by Sunday. It said the “vast majority of them have a long-term housing solution” already prepared.

The agency said that nearly 55,000 Texas households were evacuated after Harvey and couldn’t return home.

The family requested that visitation be observed in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne on Friday, June 29, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, June 30, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A rosary was prayed Friday, June 29, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Rev. Allen Breaux of St. Benedict The Moor Catholic Church, Duson, was the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and conducted the funeral services.

CHURCH POINT - The third time wasn’t the charm for the Crowley Millers in their showdown with the St. Landry Bank Indians for the Seventh District title.

After splitting their regular season series, the two teams squared off for the third time Thursday in a special playoff to determine the league champion and it was the Indians that walked away with the crown with a 4-1 victory.

JDSO arrests three in two separate incidents

Deputies of the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested two men and one woman Wednesday in connection with two separate vehicle-related burglaries.

Jason Dehart, 37, of Iowa was arrested and charged with illegal carrying of weapons and possession of any tools or instruments used by thieves or burglars.

Jennings claims Bronco Section Tournament championship

JENNINGS - After playing to a 3-3 deadlock in the first inning, the Jennings Bronco All-Stars erupted for 20 runs over the next four frames to defeat Church Point, 23-6, in the championship game of the Pony Baseball Sectional Tournament Wednesday evening.

The victory, Jennings’ second over Church Point in as many days, sends the local squad to next week’s Super Regional tournament at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

Oregon State wins College World Series, beating Arkansas 5-0

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Arkansas missed a chance to win the College World Series when a foul pop dropped between three infielders. Oregon State made the Razorbacks pay for it behind one of the best pitching performances in a title game.

Freshman Kevin Abel threw a twohitter for his record fourth victory in the CWS, and Oregon State — a night after escaping on the ninth-inning, two-out foul ball fiasco, beat Arkansas 5-0 on Thursday night for its third title.

Couponing 101

The Southwest Louisiana Literacy Council held a Couponing 101 class at the SOWELA Morgan Smith Site in Jennings Friday morning. At the class students were able to learn how to get the most bang for their buck while grocery shopping.

25 years of ABOB

A Block Off Broadway has assembled a special exhibit, now on display at the Old Magnolia Gift Shop, to commemorate the group’s 25th anniversary.

The exhibit is set to run through September and highlights costumes, props, cast photos, programs and posters that span almost three decades.

Lin Fake, the city arts director, said the group felt like a display for its quartercentury anniversary was a perfect idea.
