Jennings, Welsh standouts guide Millers to season-opening win

RAYNE – The Crowley Millers kicked off the 2018 American Legion season with a bang Wednesday, using a pair of big innings to cruise past the Rayne Wolves, 10-3, in a non-district contest at Legion Field.

The Millers (1-0) pushed across five runs in the second inning and added five more in fourth to stake a 10-0 lead.

Rayne avoided a shutout with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and added their final run in the sixth.

Correa’s bomb leads Astros to 4-2 win over Boston

HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa capped a May to forget with a big hit that helped the Houston Astros to a win.

Correa snapped an 0 for 10 slump with a two-run homer in the first, and Tony Kemp and Jake Marisnick each had an RBI in a 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

Correa’s home run ended a month during which he hit just .192 after batting .315 in April.

Warriors win Game 1 despite James’ 51-point outburst

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Golden State Warriors somehow withstood LeBron James’ latest brilliance on the NBA Finals stage.

A costly blunder by J.R. Smith and a disputed foul call involving James himself sure helped.

Stephen Curry scored 29 points and the Warriors capitalized on Smith’s mistake that sent the game into overtime, overcoming a 51-point performance by James to beat Cleveland 124-114 in Game 1 on Thursday night.

Critical hits help LSUE take lead in NJCAA Title Series

ENID, Okla. - LSU Eunice used a pair of three-run home runs to take down Parkland College 9-5 in the opening game of the NJCAA Division II Championship Series. The Bengals (58-6) overcame an early deficit for the third consecutive game.

Fish tale: Miss. says catch underreported, ends season

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Here’s an opposite of the normal kind of fish tale: Mississippi authorities believe commercial fishermen haven’t been owning up to all the fish they’ve caught.

Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Executive Director Joe Spraggins announced Tuesday that the second half of the state’s commercial fishing season for speckled trout, a much-sought species along the Gulf Coast, won’t happen.

That’s because officials believe commercial fishermen didn’t fully report their catches from the first half of the season.

Tribal officials investigate gillnet abandoned on Mille Lacs

ONAMIA, Minn. (AP) — Tribal authorities are investigating an abandoned gillnet found on Mille Lacs Lake that contained 67 dead walleyes.

Last week’s find has revived the controversy over tribal fishing on Mille Lacs, where the walleye population has been on a long-term decline.

Mille Lacs is co-managed between the state and eight Ojibwe bands that have court-affirmed treaty rights to net and spear a portion of the lake’s walleyes.

Spain government poised to fall, Socialists set to take helm

MADRID (AP) — Spain’s conservative government appeared doomed Thursday to lose a noconfidence vote in parliament, with the center-left Socialist party poised to take power.

A Basque nationalist party’s announcement that it would vote in favor of the motion spelled the almost certain end of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s mandate and foretold the stunning collapse of his minority government in a parliamentary vote Friday, when it will be short of support to survive.

Officials of Rajoy’s Popular Party dismissed speculation that he might resign ahead of the vote.

All business: Spelling bee finalists cut out distractions

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Naysa Modi attended the festive Memorial Day barbecue that kicks off the week for competitors in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but she left on the first bus available to return to the convention center outside Washington where the bee is staged. She blew off that evening’s opening ceremonies, too, feeling like she’d seen it all before.

Naysa, who first competed in the bee as a cherubic 9-yearold, is now a poised and accomplished speller in her fourth appearance, with a businesslike approach to match.
