Nurse rescues woman from burning car

A 79-year-old woman was rescued from a burning car by a nurse after an explosion at Jennings American Legion Hospital Thursday afternoon.

A subsequent explosion caused an adjacent car to also catch fire.

Britlyn Hargrave, a hospital nurse, said she was bringing in her supplies for the day when she heard and felt the explosion.

“At first I thought it was a gunshot,” she said. “I came around the corner and I saw it was a car and I was hoping and praying that nobody was in it, but then I heard, ‘help, help.’”

Woman refutes claims made by JDSO

Nina Ravey, who worked as the parish jail’s on-call nurse at the time of the unsolved deaths of eight local women, says comments concerning her appearance on a television talk show featured in Jennings Daily News earlier this year were damaging and untrue.

In April Ravey made an appearance on the Dr. Oz show in a segment produced by reporter Melissa Moore on the unsolved murders. During her appearance Ravey told Moore that she had treated several of the victims who told her that they had seen a drug deal that had gone wrong and that they feared they’d be murdered for it.

Morrish named NCOIL vice president

MANASQUAN, NEW JERSEY – The NCOIL Executive Committee elected Louisiana Sen. Dan “Blade” Morrish to fill the remaining term as vice president at a Thursday meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“I am honored and humbled to have been chosen to serve as vice president” said Morrish in a press release. “NCOIL is a valuable organization that I have participated with for many years as a legislator. As we begin NCOIL’s 50th anniversary, I look forward to serving and sharing the great works of this organization.”

LA boardwalk renovations underway

LAKE ARTHUR - Renovations to the boardwalk and the surrounding area near town hall here are currently underway.

Old boards will be replaced on the boardwalk itself, the diving tower will be torn down but repurposed in the future and electrical improvements will be made.

Mayor Sherry Crochet said there have not been many complaints about the aging boardwalk and its structures but it has been common knowledge that work was necessary.

First responders to host back-to-school event at city pool

The Jennings Police Department, in conjunction with the Jennings Fire Department, will be hosting a back-to-school event called Heroes and Kids on Sunday, July 22 from 3-5 p.m. at the Jennings City Pool at 807 N. Lake Arthur Ave.

Trump’s pomp-filled visit to the United Kingdom has been overshadowed by widespread protests and an explosive interview in The Sun in which he blasted May, his host, blamed London’s mayor for terror attacks against the city and argued that Europe was “losing its culture” because of immigration.

74 people die in election violence ahead of Sharif’s return

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — The deadliest attack in Pakistan’s troubled election campaign killed 70 people, including a candidate, in southwestern Baluchistan province on Friday ahead of the return to Pakistan of disgraced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

It’s expected Sharif will be whisked away by helicopter to the federal capital of Islamabad when he returns later Friday to Pakistan from London to face a 10-year prison sentence on corruption charges, anti-corruption officials said.

Tonn Receives 2018 Jeff Davis Soil & Water Conservation Award

Mr. Cutter Tonn, son of Robert and Tammy Tonn of Lacassine, was presented the 2018 Jefferson Davis Soil & Water Conservation Award by Mr. Joe Tupper; Supervisor from the Jefferson Davis Soil and Water Conservation District. Mr. Tonn was selected for this award from a field of very talented seniors from Jeff Davis Parish. His application was sent to the state where he competed with seniors from all of the 44 conservation districts in the state for the Louisiana Association of Conservation Districts Scholarship.
