RIVER PILOTS OFFERING SHUTDOWN AID TO COAST GUARD FAMILIES

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A charitable foundation established by pilots who guide ships on the lower Mississippi River is providing financial help to Coast Guard members serving without pay during the partial federal government shutdown. A release from the Crescent River Pilots Foundation says pilots will meet with members of the Coast Guard Spouses’ Club of Greater New Orleans on Friday. Pilots will then begin distributing more than 450 gift cards, each valued at $100. The meeting is set for the pilots’ office in Belle Chasse.

Trail ride promotes western heritage

A much-anticipated trail ride will soon makes its way through the area.

Riders in authentic covered wagons and cowboys on horseback will spend several days riding along roadways and sleeping under the stars.

Trail boss Glenn Daigle said the purpose of the ride is to bring awareness of western heritage to people around Southwest Louisiana. The trail ride also promotes livestock shows and the Lake Charles Rodeo.

Air Evac seeks to expand JDP services

Air Evac is looking to expand services in Southwest Louisiana, including Jeff Davis Parish.

Program Director Corey Miller said Air Evac will be working with Med Express to provide ground ambulance service to the parish over the next year.

“We would like to cut down on response times and improve emergency care in the rural areas by adding two ground units in Jeff Davis Parish this year,” he said.

WALK FOR A CURE

The Jennings Optimist Club will sponsor a “Walk for a Cure” fundraising event on Saturday, Feb. 2. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Founder’s Park on Main St. The registration fee is $15 per individual and $25 for a family of walkers. All proceeds will go towards helping families with children affected by cancer. Shirts are now on sale for $10.
