Former Coushatta chairman honored at symposium

BATON ROUGE - Former Chairman of the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana Ernest Sickey was recently honored at a banquet as a trailblazer in the evolution of Indian affairs in the southeastern United States.

The Southern University Law Center held the Tribal Courts and Tribal Sovereignty Symposium on November 1-2, 2018. The event marked the formal introduction of the Law Center’s Indian Law Program (ILP), according to a press release.

5 days, 5 races, 5 states

For those who enjoy running, the Mainly Marathons Gulf Coast Series is coming to the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park Tuesday, Feb. 19. The series gives runners the chance to participate in five days of races that will cover five different states. The series begins in Pensacola, Florida, on Saturday, Feb. 16. The next day, activities will resume in Gulfport, Mississippi. Tuesday will see runners in Jennings before continuing in Beaumont, Texas, Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Vici Woods scored a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season as the No. 2 Lady Indians dominated the Grand Lake Lady Hornets 50-25 last Friday. Woods also tallied eight against Hamilton Christian (67-19) Tuesday night in Elton’s 12th straight win to improve to 21-3, 9-0.

A Super Bowl shutout? Don’t bet on it

(AP) - Anyone willing to wager that the high-scoring Patriots or Rams will get shut out in the Super Bowl can count on a big payday if that unlikely scenario occurs.

Sports book operators William Hill and Westgate released on Thursday the hundreds of proposition bets they’ll offer for Super Bowl 53. Given that the game matches two of the NFL’s top offenses, the odds against either team being held scoreless are long.

NFL says concussions down 29 percent in regular season

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL is encouraged by progress made in reducing concussions while stressing there is much more work to be done.

On Thursday, the league said the number of concussions dropped 29 percent in 2018 from the previous season, according to preliminary data. It added that there were 135 documented concussions, down from 190. By including preseason games and practices, concussions fell from a high of 281 to 214, a 23.8 percent decrease. That was the lowest total since the 2014 season (206 reported concussions).

Appeals court bars felon mayor from taking office

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The man who was elected mayor of the small Louisiana town of Ball has lost another round in his effort to move into the office, stymied by recent passage of a constitutional restriction on felons in elected jobs.

A three-judge Louisiana appeals court panel late Thursday upheld a state district judge’s decision that Democrat Roy Hebron cannot be seated as Ball’s mayor.

State seeking ways to lessen $3B flood-protection debt

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana welcomed federal flood-protection money in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in a deal that didn’t require the state to begin repaying its share for a decade. But now that bill is coming due, and it has ballooned to a dismaying $3 billion because of accumulated interest.
