WELSH – The Welsh Greyhounds inched one step closer to making a return trip to Sulphur’s McMurry Park when they swept No. 14 Springfield 12-3 and 11-0 in a best-of-three quarterfinal series. With the series win, the Hounds will now welcome in old foe Many for another best-of-three series beginning Friday at Sportsman’s Park. The No. 6 Tigers defeated Bunkie 15-9 and 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinal match-up. The two programs have met on the grid-iron in the semifinals the last two seasons, with the Greyhounds winning both contests.

Rollover crash claims two

ROANOKE - A rollover crash Saturday afternoon resulted in the deaths of both the driver and the unrestrained passenger.

Shortly after 3:45 p.m. on April 27 Louisiana State Police (LSP) Troop D responded to a singlevehicle fatal crash on I-10 near Roanoke about five miles west of Jennings, according to LSP Trooper Derek Senegal.

The crash claimed the life of 76-year-old Hattie K. Minor of Houston, Texas and 79-year-old Earnestine B. Bell of Angie.

For a limited time, Louisiana citizens can obtain their digital driver’s license for free.

As part of an initiative to provide Louisiana citizens with better personal safety and security practices, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles and state police have worked with Envoc, the company that created the LA Wallet App, to offer digital licenses.

The cost of the LA wallet app is regularly $5.99, however, the state is making the app free until the end of May for Louisiana citizens.

A way through grief: Area mom promotes National Donate Life Month

Finding a way to grieve after losing her son to a freak accident, one area woman decided to focus on the positive and made the decision to help save lives.

National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was established by Donate Life America and its partnering organizations in 2003. Celebrated in April each year, Donate Life Month to help encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation.

Stocks edge higher after record-setting week

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks edged higher in morning trading on Wall Street Monday after a government report showed a surge in consumer spending last month.

The Commerce Department reported the biggest gain in consumer spending in a decade. It is the latest report to raise investor confidence in the market. On Friday, the U.S. government reported a surprise surge in economic growth during the first quarter, which helped push the broad S&P 500 index to the second of its record finishes last week.

Four vets honored at monthly meeting

Four veterans were honored with the Louisiana Honor Medal on Thursday, April 25, at Southwest Louisiana Veteran’s (SWLVH) Home monthly meeting.

According to the Louisiana Department of Veteran Affairs (LDVA), the award was created to honor, recognize and thank Louisiana veterans for their honorable military service.

SWLVH administrative manager Sam Doucet announced the recipients.

“We pay honor to these men who bravely answered the call and earned the dignity for their discipline and bravery,” said Doucet. “Louisiana appreciates their service to our country.”

Jewish community will ‘stand tall’ after synagogue shooting

POWAY, Calif. (AP) — Eight-year-old Noya Dahan had finished praying and gone to play with other children at her Southern California synagogue when gunshots rang out. Her uncle grabbed her and the other children, leading them outside to safety as her leg bled from a shrapnel wound.

“I was scared, really, really scared,” said Noya, recalling how the group of children cried out of fear after a gunman entered Chabad of Poway on Saturday morning and opened fire. “I didn’t see my dad. I thought he was dead.”

Ethane storage seen as key to revitalization of Appalachia

CLEVELAND (AP) — Plans are underway in Appalachia to create two underground facilities to store ethane, a byproduct of natural gas drilling seen as integral to revitalizing a region still struggling from the loss of industrial and manufacturing jobs decades ago.

Experts say the availability of storage facilities will help the tristate region of eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia attract petrochemical plants that turn ethane into raw plastic and, the hope is, attract manufacturing companies to make products ubiquitous to modern life.
