US economy grew at strong 3.2 percent rate in first quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy grew at a solid 3.2 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year, a far better outcome than expected, overcoming a host of headwinds including global weakness, rising trade tensions and a partial government shutdown.

Raptors, 76ers made changes this season, and now face off

(AP) - The last time Toronto and Philadelphia played was on February 5, a night where the Raptors went into the 76ers’ home building and had absolutely no trouble on the way to an easy win.

Later that night, the 76ers struck a deal to get Tobias Harris.

Buccaneers select LSU’s White in first round of NFL draft

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are counting on Devin White to help them become relevant again.

The powerful and speedy LSU linebacker was the fifth pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night, joining a porous defense making the transition to a 3-4 scheme after allowing the second-most points in the NFL last season.

Hitting NFL draft’s red carpet means dressing up for moment

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Brian Burns simply had to have the right pair of Spider-Man socks, so the pass rusher from Florida State had a pair overnighted to him in time for the red carpet at the NFL draft. The perfect touch to the purple suit and sunglasses making him the best-dressed.

At least in his opinion.

“How do I think I rate? I’m a 10. All day. I’m a 10,” Burns said. “Yeah it’s me. I’ve got it.”

HHS graduate named program semi-finalist

Zackery Langley, a graduating senior at Hathaway High School, has been named a Career And Technical Education semifinalist as part of the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The Career and Technical Eudcation candidates were nominated by their Chief State School Officers based on their accomplishments in career and technical education fields.

There are 620 semi-finalists in the U.S. and Langley is one of nine in the state of Louisiana. Finalists will be announced in May.

Twelve people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Friday, April 19

Matthew James Harrison, 32, of Lake Charles, was charged with probation violation.

Saturday, April 20

John Marc Foreman, of Iowa, was charged with second-degree battery.

Savoys named KC March Family of the Month

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS

The members of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish in Jennings recently recognized the family of Charles and Dee Dee Savoy as the Council’s Family of the Month for March 2019.

Charles served as Grand Knight of KC Council 2012 from July of 2012 to June of 2015, for a total of three distinguished years. He has represented the Council in an outstanding manner during Horseshoe throwing competitions conducted at the Area and State level.

Area youth place in shooting competition

Approximately 16 youth participated in the Southern Regional Shooting Sports Competition April 15-20 in Shreveport. The team consisted of Hunter Hixon, Blaise Broussard, Kain Fulton, Oran Ardoin and Cohen Cormier. The youth attended workshops all throughout the year to prepare for the competition. They participated in archery and shotgun disciplines. The Junior Modified Trap Team took fifth place in the competition. Jack Roberie won fifth place in the Advanced Shotgun Junior category. Sam Daigle was third place for the Advanced Shotgun Senior category.
