Public concern twisted into fascination

In the early days of true-crime television, shows like “Unsolved Mysteries,” “America’s Most Wanted,” “48 Hours” and “Dateline” most often served to help solve cases, capture suspects, honor victims and educate the public on the functions of law enforcement and courts.

Today’s true-crime culture saturates television, podcasts and the internet for ratings and ad dollars. The public greedily devours every dark detail and tragic fact. Armchair detectives repeatedly Google cold cases and spend hours in online forums discussing theories on the who, what, when, where and why.

Scientists seek beaches where dead whales can rot in peace

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — So many gray whales are dying off the U.S. West Coast that scientists and volunteers dealing with the putrid carcasses have an urgent request for coastal residents: Lend us your private beaches so these ocean giants can rot in peace.

Fifteen people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Friday, June 14

Paul Patrick Fontenot, 33, of Lake Charles, was arrested on a warrant and charged with theft between $1,000-$5,000.

David Joseph Cross, 35, of Iowa, was charged with domestic abuse battery.

Celebrate Women Veterans Day

The Department of Veterans Affairs predicts that by 2020, women veterans will make up about 11 percent of the veteran population.

On Wednesday, June 12, a proclamation declared this date as Louisiana Women Veterans Day.

Today, there are over 214,000 women who serve, with 14.6 percent being in active-duty military positions. In Louisiana, we have approximately 28,737 female veterans living among us.

Women have been serving in the armed forces since the Revolutionary War, and by World War II women served in many different branches and wore the military uniform.

Knights recognize members

At the June meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish in Jennings, the family of Dale and Sandra Hotard was recognized as the Council’s Family of the Month for May 2019.

Dale was one of the top ticket salesmen for an April barbecue fundraiser and helped distribute the meals. He has served on the Council’s Telephone Committee and helped collect donations during the annual Tootsie Roll drives which benefit God’s Special Angels.

June Garden of the Month

The Jennings Garden Club recently announced the winners for Garden of the Month for June. The residential winners were Missy and Scotty Gary, of 816 Magnolia Drive. Schulthess & Associates CPAs took the title in the business category for their garden located at 345 East Academy. Vincents mark 50 years of marriage

Paul and Rebecca Vincent of Jennings recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jennings with their family and a large group of friends. The Vincents were married June 28,1969, in Lake Arthur. The couple has four children including Lori Courville, Shari Conner, Matthew Vincent and Travis Vincent, as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

First Church of Christ to host homecoming service

The First Church of Christ in Jennings was founded in 1915 by Brother Evariste “Kie” Hebert. For the past 104 years, it has served the community of Jennings as a beacon of the hope that can be found in a relationship with Jesus Christ as one’s personal savior. In addition, it has also served as a shelter to hurricanes, a location for numerous weddings and a place to serve the community as a body of believers in countless other ways.
