Experts fear ‘snowball effect’ as Iran abandons nuclear deal

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — As Iran prepares to surpass limits set by its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, each step it takes narrows the time the country’s leaders would need to have enough highly enriched uranium for an atomic bomb — if they chose to build one.

The United Nations says Iran has so far respected the deal’s terms. But by Thursday, Iran says it will have over 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of lowenriched uranium in its possession, which would mean it had broken out of the atomic accord.

Seoul: US, N. Korea in talks to set up third Trump-Kim summit

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean and U.S. officials are holding “behind-the-scenes talks” to arrange a third summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the fate of the North’s expanding nuclear arsenal, South Korea’s president said, four months after a second meeting between the leaders in Vietnam collapsed without any agreement.

La. businesses getting permits to sell CBD products

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana businesses have started receiving the state’s first regulatory permits to sell CBD products, as new laws on hemp and CBD take effect.

The Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control on Monday started issuing temporary permits to sell legal CBD products, handing out 20 such permits to liquor stores, gas stations, CBD shops and other retailers. The Advocate reports the permits will expire next February when permanent regulations are expected to be written.

Flood damage at least $2B for Miss. River towns

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Repairs and cleanup following the prolonged flooding along the Mississippi River will cost more than $2 billion, an advocacy group for river communities said Tuesday.

Heavier than normal snow melt in the late winter and frequent and heavy rains through the spring led to flooding that approached record levels in several towns from Iowa to Louisiana. Equally troubling has been how long the high water has stuck around. Even now, the river remains well above flood stage throughout much of the Mississippi River corridor.

The students at Lake Arthur Elementary School (LAES) were awarded several well-deserved awards at the end of the school year. The awards ceremony was held to honor and award outstanding students for all of their hard work throughout the year. Award categories included All Year Honor Roll, All Year Banner Roll Perfect Attendance Awards, GATES Awards, Art Awards, Spelling Bee Awards, Patriotism Awards and Accelerated Reader Awards.

Crowley man charged with bringing drugs to court

WELSH - A Crowley man is currently in custody after he was found to be in possession of narcotics while appearing in court for previous citations.

Welsh Police Department Chief Marcus Crochet said Jarvis Martin, 34, of Crowley appeared in Welsh City Court at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officers noticed an odor of marijuana coming from Martin while in court. Martin was questioned and produced a bag of marijuana from his pocket.

After Martin was placed under arrest, officers discovered around 100 Oxycodone pills in his possession.

Margaret Ann Schlesinger, born March 13, 1942, passed peacefully from this earth during the morning hours of June 24, 2019, at Camelot Brookside in Jennings.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home in Jennings. Visitation will be held Friday, June 28, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., with funeral services to follow at 1 p.m.

Margaret Ann was affectionately known as “Nanny” to two generations of children in the family and they loved her dearly. She resided in Elton for most of her life and was a member of the Elton United Methodist Church.

IOTA - Eva Louella “Lou” Miller Holmes, 83, formerly of Lafayette and Kinder, died peacefully surrounded by her children on June 22, 2019, at her home in Hammond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Keith Pellerin on Friday, June 28, 2019, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iota.

The family will receive visitors at Ardoin’s Funeral Home of Iota today, Thursday, June 27, 2019, from 10 a.m until 8 p.m., with the Holy Rosary being recited at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.
