HATHAWAY - After waiting for a while, one local greenthumb can finally enjoy the fruits of his labor.

James Lejeune of Hathaway said he has always had a knack for growing fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs in his backyard. This year he was able to harvest his first homegrown pineapple.

“A neighbor of mine asked me if I was interested in giving the pineapple plant a shot,” said Lejeune. “From that one mother plant, I have produced over 11 more plants. The mother plant was originally from Hawaii and I have four more plants from a pineapple that came from Costa Rica.”

City annexes property north of I-10

The Jennings City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to annex 149 acres of property, extending the city limits north of Interstate 10.

The property runs from the Louisiana Oil and Gas Park to the Evangeline exit and includes the frontage road. The annexation does not affect any residential property.

“We have been working on this for quite some time,” said Mayor Henry Guinn. “This is going to help our city and put us in a position for economic development.”

Congress is debating emergency humanitarian aid to care for migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border. The need is obvious. With virtually no barrier to stop them, thousands of migrants are crossing illegally into the United States every day. More than a million will come this year. U.S. law prevents border officials from quickly returning them. While they are being processed, some of the migrants, including children, are being kept temporarily in terrible conditions.

Silly me. I thought one advantage of having a 76-year-old Democrat running for president is that his campaign would be refreshingly old school: a few lawn signs, a bus trip across Iowa and an occasional postcard to supporters through the U.S. Mail.

But, no. While Donald Trump holds the record for tweets by a politician, Joe Biden is on his way to setting the all-time mark for emails by a candidate. At the rate he’s going, millions of voters will each receive thousands emails from “Joe” before Election Day.

Common audit finding not indicative of problems

One finding that annually appears in audits around the parish is lack of segregation of duties (SOD). Even when the numbers and paperwork are in order, that tiny finding is a thorn that sticks in most offices’ sides.

Jennings Daily News regularly publishes audit findings for the city, towns, parish and offices within the area. It’s important to note that an SOD finding does not imply any office is failing in performance. The finding is simply a reflection of limited staffing available in small offices.

Vandy rides Rocker to 4-1 win, forces a Game 3 vs. Michigan

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Vanderbilt’s go-to guy throughout the postseason once again delivered a dominant performance.

Freshman Kumar Rocker struck out 11 while pitching 6 1/3 innings of three-hit ball, and Vanderbilt got to Michigan’s shaky bullpen in a 4-1 win in Game 2 of the College World Series finals Tuesday night.

The Commodores (58-12), who set the Southeastern Conference single-season wins record, forced a winnertake-all Game 3 on Wednesday night at TD Ameritrade Park.

Abner Doubleday feted on 200th at hometown

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP) — Abner Doubleday’s boyhood hometown is celebrating his birth 200 years ago. The story that Doubleday invented baseball in 1839 at Cooperstown, New York, has been discredited. But the Civil War officer is still celebrated in Ballston Spa. The Brookside Museum is hosting a party for Doubleday on Wednesday evening to coincide with his birth date. There will be presentations about his life, and participants will take a walk to the house where Doubleday lived when he was a young boy.

JPD seeking hit-and-run suspect

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a truck believed to be involved in a hitand-run in Jennings Tuesday morning that left two pedestrians injured.

Jennings Police Department (JPD) Chief Danny Semmes said Wednesday the suspect responsible is still at-large.

The incident took place Tuesday morning in the parking lot of the McDonald’s on Elton Road in Jennings.
