WELSH - While Mr. Drury was busy selling buggies, Mrs. Drury was busy redecorating. The Welsh Department of the Jennings Times reported Jan. 4, 1894, that Mrs. Drury had the southeast porch of her and her husband’s residence enclosed with glass to form a conservatory. It was then filled with plants and flowers.

The City of Jennings had microfilmed and donated local historical documents to the Jennings Carnegie Library. Making the presentation to librarian Laura Myers is City Clerk Saday Manuel. The documents may be viewed at the library, located on Cary Avenue.

Texas man dies at 111; rites here

Funeral services were held here Tuesday for an 111-year-old Port Arthur, Tex., man, born in slavery on a plantation near Mamou just prior to the opening of the Civil War.

Pierre Lartigue was buried in a cemetery at Silverwood after services at the Christ Sanctified Holiness Church here, leaving more than 170 direct descendants.

The Revs. N.C. Swallow of Port Arthur and G.C. Chaney of Jennings officiated at the 1 p.m. service.

Grand jury says rice buyers in conspiracy

The Grand Jury of Jefferson Davis Parish is endeavoring to put a stop to the practice among the rice buyers of agreeing on a fixed price for rice, permitting one of the buyers to make the purchase, and then dividing the rice after the sale is made.

Stock Sale Assures Country Club

A new country club will be constructed here.

V.B. McCutchen, president of the Jeff Davis Holding Corp., announces that more than 80 of the 100 shares of stock for the club have been subscribed, and the remaining shares, at $500 each, will be placed within the next two weeks. Members are from several parish communities.

IT’S AN ORANGUTAN! ENDANGERED SPECIES BORN AT AUDUBON ZOO

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — It’s an orangutan! The Audubon Zoo has announced the birth of a critically endangered Sumatran orangutan to longtime inhabitant Feliz and Jambi , a male brought from Germany last fall.

The species has been drastically reduced by hunting and by destruction of the forests where they live. Fewer than 14,000 of the great apes with long red hair are believed to exist in the wild, and “overall numbers continue to decline dramatically ,” according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Elton tax would benefit campuses

ELTON — Voters in School District No. 22 will decide in November whether or not to support a bond issue that would allow for the majority of the elementary here to be rebuilt.

The bonds would be sold and repaid over 20 years through a 26 mills property tax estimated to generate $4 million over 20 years. District residents in Jeff Davis and Allen parishes currently pay a millage rate of 13.77 toward the school that will soon expire.

CELEBRATING 90 YEARS

One of the oldest and continuously operated golf courses in the State of Louisiana is celebrating its 90-year anniversary. The club’s original charter date was May, 29,1929.

“In June of 1929, the course began with 44.37 acres,” said General Manager Dwayne Guidry. “It began with a clubhouse on U.S. 90 and 100 members.”

Guidry said the Jeff Davis Holding Corporation bought 10.09 acres of land in 1945 and built the Jennings Country Club building in 1957.

Eventually, the club house was moved further down on Louise Street.

New standards aim to improve surgery for the oldest patients

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 92-year-old had a painful tumor on his tongue, and major surgery was his best chance. Doctors called a timeout when he said he lived alone, in a rural farmhouse, and wanted to keep doing so.

“It was ultimately not clear we could get him back there” after such a big operation, said Dr. Tom Robinson, chief of surgery at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System.
