Anger only lends to the problem

Hardly a week goes by when we pick up the newspaper or tune into one form of media or another and read or hear of another mass shooting. This past week saw a shooting somewhere in Brooklyn whereby one was killed and at least 11 others wounded at something called the “Old Timers’ Festival.” Then there was a shooting at the Gilroy, California, Garlic Festival where three were killed, including a 6-year-old boy, and 15 others were wounded. Those stats may change by the time this is published.

Calif. festival killer’s motive still a mystery

GILROY, Calif. (AP) — The 19-yearold gunman who opened fire at a Northern California food festival was “kind of a loner” and much of his life was shrouded in mystery, the FBI said Tuesday as investigators searched for a motive.

Police believe Santino William Legan fired randomly Sunday, killing three people, after cutting through a fence to get into the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Officers patrolling the popular event responded within a minute and killed him.

Dart tourney to benefit Clay LeBlanc Memorial

LAKE ARTHUR - When tragedy strikes, people in this community do what they can to assist their neighbors. A fundraiser is slated to raise money for a memorial fund created to help support the family of Clay Leblanc, who was fatally injured in a recent rodeo accident.

On Sunday, Aug. 4, Leblanc’s graduating class of 2014 will host a doubles dart tournament from 1-7 p.m. at Charlie’s Place in Lake Arthur.

Sanders, Warren clash with moderates over ‘Medicare for All’

DETROIT (AP) — The signature domestic proposal by the leading progressive candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination came under withering attack from moderates in a debate that laid bare the struggle between a call for revolutionary policies and a desperate desire to defeat President Donald Trump.

Standing side by side at center stage on Tuesday, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren slapped back against their more cautious rivals who ridiculed “Medicare for All” and warned that “wish-list economics” would jeopardize Democrats’ chances for taking the White House in 2020.

Cyber attacks are the new normal

Is anything safe online? It seems the answer to that question is, “No.”

Data breaches and cyber attacks are now all too common. In the earlier days of Internet popularity, users worried that someone could hack into their emails or steal their bank account or credit cards numbers. Some people hear about cyber attacks and hackers and think they are safe because they do not shop or handle financial business online. The truth is, however, your information is still floating around in some online system.

Mueller’s real warning

There was a clear message in Robert Mueller’s testimony last week before two House committees, but it wasn’t just about the danger Russia poses to our elections. It was the risk that aging presents for our public servants.

Mr. Mueller has had an illustrious career as a faithful public servant - one of the few things Republicans and Democrats were wholeheartedly able to agree upon. Some argued that his 488-page written report should have been allowed to speak for itself.

Schools under cybersecurity protocol

Governor declares emergency following attack

Following cyber attacks on four school systems in Louisiana, districts this week are under a state of emergency that has left them without access to online information and programs.

As of Wednesday morning, school systems in Morehouse, Sabine and Tangipahoa parishes and the City of Monroe have experienced what Gov. John Bel Edward’s office labeled “severe, intentional cybersecurity breaches.” These threats, Edwards stated, could be ongoing.

Leroy and Joetta (Bussy) LaPoint celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary today. The couple was married at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arthur. Their children include Troy LaPoint of Scott, Scott and Paula Helling and Eric and Krisha LaPoint of Jennings, L.T. and Kellie King of Westlake and Mendy LaPoint of Jennings.
