NFL At 100: Arrival of 1970s ushers in NFL’s modern era

(AP) - A look at the NFL’s sixth decade, the 1970s:

FRANCHISES: The NFL’s final and biggest merger kicked the league into a new era in 1970, the start of a decade where pro football entered the modern era. Combining the AFL and NFL meant splitting 26 teams into two conferences.

Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, New England, New York Jets, Oakland, Pittsburgh and San Diego went to the new American Football Conference.

Welsh man runs from police, ingests drugs

WELSH - A Welsh man is being charged with obstruction of justice after ingesting several illegal narcotics while fleeing from authorities.

On Wednesday, Eric Tramain Gray, 32, of Welsh, was charged with possession of synthetic cannabinoid, possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance, resisting an officer, obstruction of justice, possession of a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance.

Lawyers in Libraries event set for Oct. 29

LAKE ARTHUR - The Jeff Davis Library, the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Louisiana Library Association are partnering to present its Sixth Annual Lawyers in Libraries statewide program on Oct. 29 in Lake Arthur. Elizabeth Roche will provide free individual consultations on legal issues from 12-2 p.m. at the Lake Arthur Library Branch located at 600 Fourth Street.

The program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but highly recommended.

No Halloween trouble because youths at game

Friday night will be Halloween, but thanks to the Lake Charles-Jennings football classic to be played that night, little vandalism is expected because the youth of the city will be en masse to the game.

But Halloween no longer gives Jennings officials any worry for the holiday of pranks, when witches and goblins were wont to dance and cavort of yore, was classed as fairy story stuff these past 10 years and no longer are fences torn down of outbuildings carried away.

JDN seeks photos for Veterans Day project

In observance of Veterans Day, Jennings Daily News encourages the public to share photos of any living veteran of the United States military. These photos will be published at no charge in the Nov. 10 weekend edition.

All photos and information must be turned in by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Send pictures and information to editor@jenningsdailynews.net, or mail or bring items to 238 N. Market Street in Jennings. An investigation by campus and state police is ongoing.

Halloween activities planned across JDP

Halloween activities have been planned across Jeff Davis Parish.

The Town of Lake Arthur will host its annual Boo on the Avenue on Sunday, Oct. 27 with plenty to do for people of all ages. Games and activities will begin at 3 p.m. A small fee will be required to play. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Goody giveaways will begin at 5 p.m. and everyone is invited to hand out treats.

Candlelight vigil in remembrance of domestic abuse victims

Communities Against Domestic Violence (CADA) held its annual candle vigil at Founders Park to remember those affected by domestic abuse.

“As some of you may know, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” said Executive Director Lacey Guidry. “We would just like to show our support and acknowledgement to those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.”

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GETS 765 NEW BOOKS THROUGH $10K DONATION

LAFAYETTE (AP) — A Louisiana elementary school has added 765 new books to its library thanks to a $10,000 donation.

The Advertiser reports J.W. Faulk Elementary hosted a ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the new books and the people who made it possible. Librarian Violet Smith says the elementary school can often only order $800 of books through the state each year, an amount that covers maybe 60 books. She said the donation added new titles to the library and allowed the school to replace older books.
