Sweater weather

October is spectacular for so many reasons. This month is home to my birthday, my favorite holiday, and the only time of the year that I can add to my decorative skeleton collection.

Additionally, something beautiful happens. For the first time in entirely too many months, mother nature completes her excruciatingly long walk to her space heater and clicks the temperature down a few notches.

Iota Middle School announces honor roll students

Iota Middle School recently announced Honor Roll for the first nine weeks. The following students are included in that list:

Lacassine FFA to hold annual Turkey Shoot

The Lacassine High School (LHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) Alumni Association is holding their annual Turkey Shoot fundraiser in November.

Ag Teacher Lee Ann Vincent said the funds help the alumni to provide financial support throughout the year to the LHS FFA program.

“This helps us provide scholarships to graduating seniors that are active in FFA and also pays for meals for the annual FFA banquet and meal expenses for when we travel to state and national conventions,” she said.

Join us in recognizing veterans

A simple yet meaningful way to publicly celebrate veterans will make its annual appearance in the newspaper Nov. 10.

Each Veterans Day, generous business and individual sponsors team with Jennings Daily News to showcase area veterans. How is this done? The public is invited to submit images of veterans to be published at no cost in a special Nov. 10 edition. A veteran’s first and last name must be included with their picture. Optional information that can be included is branch, dates of service, rank and combat history.

Heavy rains douse South as tropical disturbance looms

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Parts of the drought-parched South were under flood watches and warnings Friday with forecasters saying as much as 10 inches of rain could fall.

The National Weather service said an advancing cold front would collide with a weather disturbance that became a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm’s center was 320 miles (515 kilometers) southsouthwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana. It had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph).

Florence Ann Conner Guidry

LAKE ARTHUR - Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Ann Conner Guidry, 75, will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, in Miguez Funeral Home, with Rev. Roland Vaughan officiating.

Funeral home visitation will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery.

Mrs. Guidry passed away at 12:31 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, in Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

Mayor Signs Proclamation

Mayor Henry Guinn recently signed a proclamation designating October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) outreach coordinator Cynthia Petry (left) and legal advocate Ora Randolph (right) were present at the signing.
