Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings dies at 68

BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, a sharecropper’s son who rose to become a civil rights champion and the chairman of one of the U.S. House committees leading an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump, died Thursday of complications from longstanding health problems. He was 68.

Cummings was a formidable orator who advocated for the poor in his black-majority district , which encompasses a large portion of Baltimore and more well-to-do suburbs.

One killed, one injured in shooting

A shooting in Jennings Wednesday night left one man dead, one victim in the hospital and nearly injured a 3-year-old child.

Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes said at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, a fatal shooting took place on West Street.

The suspect, Steven John Edwards, 41, of Jennings, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Head Start Awareness to feature activities, band

During the week of Oct. 21-25, Save the Children Head Start will host of variety of activities designed to bring some attention to the program while allowing the children to have a good time.

“The Washington-Marion Band will be here around 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, with a live performance to kick off a fun-filled week,” said Director Debbie Johnson.

Each day will have its own dress-up theme and parents are encouraged to join in the festivities.

Suspects sought for store theft

Jennings Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying three suspects who were caught on camera stealing a phone and a laptop from Walmart in Jennings, according to Police Chief Danny Semmes.

“Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the subject’s in these crimes,” he said.

In one incident, two female suspects were seen on security footage prying a cell phone from a bracket in the electronics department at around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 5. They were also captured exiting the store and driving off in a dark-colored van.

BATON ROUGE (AP) — No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 LSU are in the process of turning long-held perceptions of the Southeastern Conference upside down.

They are the highestscoring teams in the nation at the midway point of this college football season. That should shatter any lingering notions that the SEC features stifling defense and ball-control offenses heavy on smash-mouth runs.

Foo Fact of the Game: While at the Civic Center, President Trump had a lot of security. However, just one mile away at Wildcat Stadium, ball security was a problem as both Jennings and St. Louis Catholic lost 2 of their 4 fumbles.

JHS looks to rebound at home

The daunting pre-district schedule has been just that, daunting.
