Study: ‘Medicare for All’ not only way to universal coverage

WASHINGTON (AP) — Health care memo to Democrats: There’s more than one way to get to coverage for all.

A study out Wednesday finds that an approach similar to the plan from former Vice President Joe Bide n can deliver about the same level of coverage as the government-run “Medicare for All” plan from presidential rival Bernie Sanders.

The study from the Commonwealth Fund and the Urban Institute think tanks concludes that the U.S. can achieve a goal that has eluded Democrats since Harry Truman by building on former President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Over 3,000 JDP seniors served by library’s outreach program

Jeff Davis Parish libraries takes the library to seniors who may not be able to visit the brick and mortar establishments themselves.

The staff visits both homebound residents, as well as those living at area nursing homes and the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home. Director Clare Coleman said so far this year, outreach services have reached 3,222 seniors in Jeff Davis Parish.

Medus serves both country and community

Allen Medus bravely answered the call to serve his country during World War II, according to American Legion Post 19 historian Glenn McFarlain.

“Allen is a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II who participated in three major campaigns – Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan,” said McFarlain.

Medus was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service during the war.

It was the first cool night of the season and as my friend Tom Precht would always say, “It’s a great night for high school football.” It was actually pretty cold due to the wind. The fans that made the short trip to Lake Charles had to bundle up. I don’t think most of us were prepared for the wind chill.

Brenda Loftin Fontenot

Mrs. Brenda Loftin Fontenot, 73, of Jennings passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019.

Visitation for Mrs. Fontenot will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019, in Miguez Funeral Home chapel from 2-7 p.m.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Mrs. Fontenot was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family.
