Voters head to polls Saturday

Voters across Jeff Davis will head out to the polls this Saturday to make their voices heard in the Oct. 12 Louisiana Gubernatorial Primary election.

Items on the ballot include governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer, commissioner of agriculture and forestry, commissioner of insurance, BESE District 7, District 25 State Senator and District 37 State Representative, as well as four constitutional amendment propositions.

There are also police jury seats on the ballot for some voters.

PJ to award bid for elevation work

Jeff Davis Police Jurors will award a bid today for work on a residence in Welsh that has flooded several times in recent years.

The home, located at 710 South Sarah Street, needs to be elevated to avoid further flood damage. The house has flooded four times in less than six years, according to District 11 Police Juror Butch LaFarque.

BBQ Time

Firefighters from the Jennings Fire Department will be making their way around town, going door to door to sell tickets for their annual barbecue fundraiser.

“It’s time for our yearly barbecue sale,” said Chief Safety Officer Shawn O’Quinn.

The tickets are now on sale for $10 per plate.”

O’Quinn said purchasers can choose between brisket or half a chicken along with sides including baked beans, potato salad and bread.

COA’s Fall Fest Gumbo set for Oct. 25

WELSH - The Council on Aging is gearing up for its annual Fall Fest Gumbo. Donations are now being accepted for bingo and door prizes or raffle items.

“Any local businesses, clubs or candidates running for a seat in the upcoming election can donate gift cards or other items that will be given away on the day of the event,” said activities director Kim Benoit.

This year’s event has been slated for Friday, Oct. 25. The meal is sponsored by Sheriff Ivy Woods.

FBI: Inmate is the deadliest serial killer in US history

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The inmate who claims to have killed more than 90 women across the country is now considered to be the deadliest serial killer in U.S. history, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

Samuel Little, who has been behind bars since 2012, told investigators last year that he was responsible for about 90 killings nationwide between 1970 and 2005. In a news release on Sunday, the FBI announced that federal crime analysts believe all of his confessions are credible, and officials have been able to verify 50 confessions so far.
