Dogs to face dangerous Washington-Marion

The Jennings Bulldogs will continue their trek through Class 4A Friday night when they travel to Lake Charles to face a dangerous Washington-Marion team. Jennings is still searching for its first win of the season, however the Dogs have been right here in each game they have tangled in. Of the three losses Jennings has, their opponents are a combined 8-1, with only DeRidder falling to the Chargin’ Indians by a final of 42-40 in week two.

LSU’s Orgeron eager to see how defense emerges from off week

BATON ROUGE (AP) — LSU coach Ed Orgeron hopes to see evidence this week that the fifth-ranked Tigers’ defense is on the mend — both physically and figuratively.

Having last weekend off provided extra time for rest and reexamination of everything that hasn’t gone right on that side of the ball.

AP Top 25: Alabama jumps to No. 1 after Clemson close call

(AP) - Alabama is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this season, replacing preseason No. 1 Clemson after the Tigers had a close call.

Alabama received 29 of 61 firstplace votes Sunday from the media panel as the Tigers’ one-point victory at North Carolina gave the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank the first shake-up at the top this season. Clemson slipped to No. 2 and received 18 first-place votes.

Steelers break out of funk, stomp Bengals 27-3

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers insisted they might have been winless through three weeks, but they were far from hopeless. They stressed the process of finding an identity with franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out for the season with an elbow injury would take time and a collective effort from all involved.

An effort that looked an awful lot like what they put together during a 27-3 pounding of Cincinnati on Monday night.

Passenger removed from bus

WELSH - Officers here had to physically remove a woman from a Greyhound bus Monday after she refused several requests to exit the vehicle.

According to Welsh Police Department Chief Marcus Crochet, around 1 p.m. officers were dispatched to the scene after reports came in of a disturbance in a Greyhound bus parked in the Cajun Tales parking lot.

A bus passenger, Angela Rose Hedrick, 36, was charged with remaining after forbidden, simple escape and possession of a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance. She had no known address.

Early Voters

Wendell Fontenot of Welsh made his voice heard in local and state races Monday morning. He cast his ballot during the early voting period for the Oct. 12 election at the Jeff Davis Parish Registrar of Voters Office (ROV). ROV Joann Blair said there were 391 voters that took advantage of early voting on Saturday alone and nearly half that number by mid-morning on Monday. Early voting continues until Oct. 5.

DOTD installs all-way stop in Elton

ELTON - This week the state is making efforts to improve the safety of an intersection in Elton.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) installed an all-way stop Monday at the intersection of U.S. 190 and La. 26 in Elton.

According to DOTD Public Information Officer Tammy York, all motorists on the U.S. 190 approaches will be required to make a complete stop prior to entering the intersection.

“Advanced notification is provided on intersection approaches via portable changeable message signs and warning signage,” she said.

Students from Jeff Davis schools are setting up club and class booths for parish fair competitions this week. Elton High students Tanner Lacombe and Juliana Carbalan worked Monday to ready a presentation.

Donations needed for Texas flood victims

Due to the recent flooding experienced in parts of southeast Texas, donations are being collected to help those affected by Tropical Storm Imelda’s torrential rainfall.

“There are still reports of almost two feet of standing water in some places,” said organizer Lauren Trahan. “We are trying to collect essential items these people will need on a daily basis.”
