Countdown for NFL’s greatest moment down to final 4

(AP) - The countdown for the NFL’s greatest moment is down to the final four.

As part of its celebration of the 100th season, the league is conducting balloting for its most iconic moment at NFL.com/greatestmoment and is encouraging fans to vote for each of the nominations.

The voting started with 32 moments (one for each team) and has been whittled down each week.

The final four contenders are:

Six killed in Germany shooting, including suspect’s parents

BERLIN (AP) — Six people were killed and another two wounded in a shooting in the southwestern German town of Rot am See on Friday, police said. The suspect’s parents were among the dead and the other victims also were believed to be relatives.

A man called police shortly after 12:45 p.m. (1145 GMT) and told them he had killed several people, regional police chief Reiner Moeller said at a news conference.

China expands lockdown against virus, fast-tracks hospital

BEIJING (AP) — China expanded its lockdown against the deadly new virus to an unprecedented 36 million people and rushed to build a prefabricated, 1,000-bed hospital for victims Friday as the outbreak cast a pall over Lunar New Year, the country’s biggest, most festive holiday.

The number of confirmed cases around the world climbed sharply to more than 850, with at least 25 deaths, all of them in China.

Deandres Murice Thomas, 37, of Welsh, was charged with second-degree battery and domestic abuse battery with strangulation.

Chet Hanks, 27, of Kinder, was charged with aggravated burglary.

Russian Auschwitz survivor: Only coincidence that I lived

MOSCOW (AP) — The 75 years since Yevgeny Kovalev was a teenage prisoner in Auschwitz have been marked by tormented memories and a wonder that he’s still alive.

“Remembering all that is always like torture for me, can you imagine that? I’m even wondering myself how I could survive those times,” the 92-yearold retired Russian factory worker told The Associated Press ahead of the 75th anniversary Monday of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army.

“We lived for minutes. We didn’t hope that we would survive,” he said.

Firefighting plane crashes in Australia, killing 3 Americans

SYDNEY (AP) — Three American crew members were killed Thursday when a C-130 Hercules aerial water tanker crashed while battling wildfires in southeastern Australia, officials said.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the crash deaths in the state’s Snowy Monaro region, which came as Australia grapples with an unprecedented fire season that has left a large swath of destruction.

Threats made against Iota schools

Three agencies investigating

IOTA — Schools here were closed Thursday after bomb threats were made against two campuses twice this week.

According to the Iota Police Department, a bomb threat was made via social media late Tuesday, Jan. 21. Iota police worked with the Acadia and Calcasieu sheriffs’ offices to search the Iota High and Iota Middle campuses, which are adjacent to one another.
