It has always amazed me how few people attend basketball games compared to football. There is no concern about the weather, so that can’t be a factor. Have we reached a point where attendance even in high school is based on wins and losses?

The biggest crowd I have seen this year was last Friday night at Lake Arthur when the hosts battled Lafayette Christian. There was still plenty of room, but it was the most people I have seen thus far this season.

Hillary’s dubious distinction

So here’s the good news: For all their assiduous efforts, President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr have failed to fully weaponize the U.S. criminal justice system. There’s never going to be a Russian-style show trial of Trump’s 2016 Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. The “vast right-wing conspiracy” that scandal-obsessed pundits once lampooned her for describing has once again struck out.

City of Jennings audit shows healthy finances

The City of Jennings showed healthy finances with one finding of noncompliance with the state’s public bid law for the year ending June 30, 2019.

The 106-page report of the entity’s financial statements was released this week by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office (LLAO) and was completed by certified public accountant J. Aaron Cooper, of Jennings.

According to the report, total assets including governmental and business-type activities were listed at $43.7 million. This included cash and cash equivalents, investments and other assets.

At 90, Native Alaska woman will be first counted in US Census

TOKSOOK BAY, Alaska (AP) — Lizzie Chimiugak has lived for 90 years in the windswept western wilds of Alaska, born to a nomadic family who lived in mud homes and followed where the good hunting and fishing led.

Her home now is an outpost on the Bering Sea, Toksook Bay, and she is about to become the most well-known woman in the tiny town, where at 90 she is considered an elder: She will be the first person counted in the U.S. Census, taken every 10 years to apportion representation in Congress and federal money.

Repeat offender in custody on home invasion charges

A Jennings man with an extensive criminal career is in custody again this week for home invasion and aggravated assault.

On Sunday, Luke Sherman Freeman, 38, of Jennings, was charged with aggravated assault, home invasion and disturbing the peace.

Police Chief Danny Semmes said officers had contact with Freeman twice on Sunday.

In the first incident, a call came in that Freeman was remaining after forbidden on property located at a mobile home park on La. 26. Officers asked Freeman to leave the scene and he cooperated.

Hundreds in river ‘no man’s land’ after Mexico troops block way

CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico (AP) — Hundreds of Central American migrants were stranded in a sort of no-man’s land on the river border between Guatemala and Mexico after running up against lines of Mexican National Guard troops deployed to keep them from moving en masse into the country and on north toward the U.S.

Hornets, ladies sweep Midland

MIDLAND – The Hathaway High School boys and girls basketball squads unflinchingly took on the Midland teams Friday night at the Midland gymnasium. The Hornets shouldered the Rebels 72-67, while the Lady Hornets drilled a 53-48 win against the Lady Rebels.

How much will baseball suffer with newest scandal still lingering?

Within a month, Major League pitchers and catchers will begin reporting to Spring Training Camps littered throughout Florida and Arizona, and is normally a time for baseball enthusiasts to get the blood flowing again. However, yet another scandal has rocked the sport that may just keep some purists of the game scratching their head on where exactly the game has gone. The latest breaking of the old “unwritten rules” of baseball were found in an investigation of the 2017 Houston Astros using technology to steal opposing pitchers’ signs and relay them to hitters.
