Qualifying continues for April 4 primary

Qualifying kicked off Wednesday for the April 4 presidential presidential preference primary election.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS), nominees for Democrat, Republican and Independent parties have until the end of today, Friday, to qualify for the presidential primary.

The race also includes the election of party committee members, however, Republicans wanting to place their hats in the ring for state party leadership will have to wait as GOP governance elections have been stalled amid a court dispute.

Jennings High preps for emergencies

As part of the safe school emergency procedures, Jennings High School held a practice drill. All students and faculty evacuated the facility and moved to the designated safe area. In the event of a fire, bomb threat or any other emergency situation, everyone is to meet at the church building located across the street.

Police Jury agrees to form census committee

The Jeff Davis Police Jury agreed Wednesday to form a committee to help with education around the upcoming decennial census set for this spring.

Tribal, state and local governments, community-based organizations, faithbased groups, schools and businesses play a key role in developing partners to educate and motivate residents to participate in the 2020 Census, according to a flyer.

LA citizens voice concerns over abandoned structures

LAKE ARTHUR - At a recent town meeting, citizens expressed concern in regards to abandoned homes and buildings around the community.

One resident said they have such a beautiful town and the blighted properties should be removed. There were questions as to how officials handle the demolition of unsightly structures.

“The procedure includes sending certified letters to the registered owners of the property in question,” said Crochet. “We ask them to attend our next council meeting the following month to talk to us about the property.”

Dogs, Lady Dogs sweep pair from Welsh on hardwood

WELSH – The Jennings Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs picked up a pair of victories on the road in Welsh Tuesday night. The Lady Dogs topped the Lady Hounds by a final of 55-41, while the Bulldogs wiped the floor with the Hounds by a count of 89-57.

Cardinals rain threes in 87-68 win over Kinder

KINDER – The Lacassine Cardinals (LHS) took the Kinder Yellow Jackets out to the woodshed Tuesday night and drummed them by a final of 87-68 in a nondistrict affair on the road. The Cardinals used the 3-pointer as their main weapon in the thrashing, as they landed 12 longrange bombs from 3-point land in the win. The victory ups the Cardinals overall record to 11-15 on the season, and they will travel to Reeves tonight for a non-district tilt with the Raiders.

Boys Little Dribblers Registration underway

Registration for Boy’s Little Dribblers is underway for boys ages nine through 14. Eligible boys must turn nine before August 31 and can’t be 15 after August 31. Registration forms will be given out at all schools beginning next week, or you can pick one up at the Jennings Recreation Department. Blood donations vital to community

Millions of Americans would die each year if not for those willing to donate blood. January is National Blood Donor Awareness month, fitting since there is generally a shorter supply of blood during the winter season.

One in seven people in the U.S. enter ing a hospital are in need of blood. About 39,000 units of blood are needed daily for emergency treatment of cancer patients organ transplant recipients and accident victims, as well as other patients.

Behind Bolton’s decision

Former national security adviser John Bolton shook up the Trump impeachment standoff recently with his announcement that, if subpoenaed, he is “prepared to testify” before a Senate trial. It’s still not clear, of course, when or even if a trial might occur, since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is withholding the articles of impeachment. But if there is a trial, and if the Senate subpoenas Bolton, he won’t fight it.
