Local tourism: The Carnegie

Ifound myself climbing the steps of the Jennings Carnegie Public Library last weekend, anticipating that good ol’ library smell that never lets me down. I think it’s gotta be the scent of exploration, curiosity and joy all mixed into one. It also could be just really, really old paper.

As a hardcore bookworm myself, it’s hard to believe that I’ve lived in Jennings for months and yet still had not explored this historic gem.

LAHS Senior Beta Club competes at state convention

Lake Arthur High School’s Sr. Beta Club recently competed at state convention, where 135 clubs were represented. Auto Breaux was the one student to place in competition, earning fifth place in Math Competition Division I. He will compete at the national level in June in Ft. Worth, Texas. Students who also competed and their categories are the following:

Academic Competitions

• Language Arts Division 1 - Bryleigh Romero and Kennedy Bihm

• Language Arts Division 2 - Kenzie Hanks and Gabriella Virella

• Math Division 1 - Kendal Arceneaux

Mermentau Lions urge restocking of Mermentau River

THE JENNINGS DAILY NEWS Sept. 6, 1957

At a ladies night meeting this week, the Mermentau Lions Club drafted a resolution urging the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to take action as soon as possible toward restocking the Mermentau River with game fish.

The club noted that there was a heavy fish kill during and after Hurricane Audrey on June 27th, and that game fishing was severely curtailed in the Mermentau River.

Bass, perch and bream are asked for principality.

All first grades must enter now

JENNINGS DAILY TIMES-RECORD Sept. 18, 1917

Attention is called to the enrollment of children in the first grade. No child is to be admitted to the first grade for the first term after the end of the second week. The second term will begin about the middle of January and a child may enter the first grade at that time. It may also be well to announce that all children subject to the compulsory attendance law must be enrolled by the end of the week.

Team to play for state championship

The Jennings basketball team is to play for the state championship this year.

There are sixteen districts in the state of Louisiana, of which Jennings is in the fourteenth. The champions of each district will go to Baton Rouge to play the championship games.

The game that was scheduled with Gerstner Field for last Friday was called off on account of the dampening of the weather and the wet ground. The Jennings team lost quite a lot of money on the deal on account of having to pay the expenses of the visiting team.
