The Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home has been closed to outside visitors since mid-March to protect both residents and staff from the coronavirus. As a way of keeping in touch with their loved ones, residents have been introduced to the technology of video chats.

“Our administrator, Matthew Duhon, came up with the idea,” said Therapeutic Specialist Kaly Gist. “He wanted our veterans to stay in touch with family and friends once all outside visitation stopped.”

Jail inmate released over coronavirus concerns fatally shot

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An alleged gang leader who faced racketeering charges was fatally shot in New Orleans just days after being released amid concerns that the coronavirus will spread in jail.

Glynn McCormick was killed Sunday afternoon in the same area where authorities previously accused him of dealing drugs, news outlets reported.

No suspects have been identified. The shooter pulled up in an SUV, fired shots and then drove away, police said.

Wall Street adds to gains as hopes build for virus peak

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are higher in midday trading on Wall Street Tuesday as markets around the world aimed to add to their huge rally from a day earlier.

The S&P 500 was up nearly 2.5 percent after being up as much as 3.5 percent in the morning. On Monday, it surged 7 percent following encouraging signs that the coronavirus pandemic may be close to leveling off in some of the hardest hit areas of the world.
