Netflix’s ‘Cuties’ becomes target of backlash

(AP) - The backlash to the French independent film “Mignonnes,” or “Cuties,” started before it had even been released because of a poster that went viral for its provocative depiction of its young female actors. But the spotlight has only intensified since the film became available on Netflix last week and it has become the target of heightened politicized outrage from members of Congress, including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and others online calling for subscribers to #CancelNetflix.

STATE MOVES TO MODIFIED PHASE THREE

Governor John Bel Edwards announced that he had made the decision to ease some of the COVID-19 restrictions and allow the state to move into Phase Three beginning Friday, Sept. 11. During the press conference, Edwards said not all COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted, emphasizing that the statewide mask mandate would remain in place.

As Sally chugs to coast Gulf residents prepare

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Storm-weary Gulf Coast residents rushed to finish last-minute preparations Monday as Tropical Storm Sally chugged slowly through warm Gulf waters. Forecasters predicted landfall as a hurricane, and said the biggest threat is flooding, with as much as two feet of rain falling in some areas.

“The bottom line continues to be that Sally is expected to be a dangerous slow-moving hurricane near the coast of southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the next 2-3 days,” the National Hurricane Center said early Monday.

Saints’ Davis agrees to 3-year extension

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Saints linebacker Demario Davis has agreed to a three-year extension worth up to $27 million, a person familiar with the situation said Sunday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced. It was first reported by Fox Sports.

Davis, an eight-year veteran, is entering his third season with New Orleans. In each of his first two seasons, he has started every game and had at least 110 tackles in each campaign.

West Coast fires raise fight over climate change

BEAVERCREEK, Ore. (AP) — With crews battling wildfires that have killed at least 35 people, destroyed neighborhoods and enveloped the West Coast in smoke, another fight has emerged: leaders in the Democratic-led states and President Donald Trump have clashed over the role of climate change ahead of his visit Monday to California.

California, Oregon and Washington state have seen historic wildfires that have burned faster and farther than ever before. Numerous studies in recent years have linked bigger wildfires in the U.S. to global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas.
