Alexei Navalny is what we need -ut no longer have - in the United States: A political hero.

We have politicians, some better than others. But each one of them, from the lowliest member of the school board trying to shove critical race theory down our throats, to the president pale in comparison to this Russian dissident.

Work starts on $32M project to turn open water back to marsh

CAMERON (AP) — Construction has begun on a $32 million project to bring back hundreds of acres of marsh to a part of southwest Louisianawhere storms, sinking and other factors have turned thousands of acres to open water, the state’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority said. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock has begun building containment dikes north of Holly Beach to hold nearly 2.4 million cubic yards of sand dredged from the Gulf of Mexico and pumped more than 5 miles inland, according to a news release Thursday.

Pharmacist: Vaccinations going well

WELSH - Another round of vaccines are being distributed to the qualifying public and a pharmacist here said the process is going smoothly.

Claude Watkins with Welsh Pharmacy said he has been vaccinating 10 people per day.

“There are 10 doses in a vial and once opened, the vial has to be used in six hours,” he said. “So like other places, we have a list of who wants the vaccine and as we go down the list, we schedule appointments for people to receive their shot.”

Coleman: Black History Month ‘a time to reflect’

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements made by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.

“Black History Month is a period of self-pride,” said Jeff Davis Parish School Board Curriculum Supervisor Dr. Kieran Coleman. “It is a period in which we can celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of our ancestors. We can reflect and think about those experiences that happened to them and grow and hopefully change history so that those experiences may never happen again.”

Just as the Covid-19 pandemic affected high school football throughout the state of Louisiana and all of the country in the fall, it’s still rearing its ugly head into high school basketball season into the winter months. With the Louisiana high school regular season nearing a close, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) has been able to avoid a complete shutdown, but it’s come with several quarantines of teams and lots of missed ball games.

HATHAWAY - There’s an old saying that “there’s always a first time for everything” no matter what the topic. For the Athletic Department, school and athletes at Hathaway High School (HHS), that saying came true last week when senior golfer Jace Lejeune became the first Hornet to sign a National Letter of Intent to play collegiately. Lejeune signed scholarship papers with Nicholls State University at a ceremony held at the school, and explained it was a dream come true for him.

Leblanc named BCS Student of the Year

Campbell Leblanc was chosen as Student of the Year at Bethel Christian School.

Last week, she competed at the District Level at St. Louis High School. She was chosen as District Student of the Year and will now be in the running for Regional Student of the Year.

Aside from being an honor roll student, she spends her weekends competing at rodeos all over the state and loves spending time on the family farm.
