Had I not once spent a semester livling adjacent to the Smith College campus in Massachusetts years ago, I’d probably never have read Michael Powell’s extraordinary New York Times account of a tragi-comic racial debacle there.

City approves beer, alcohol permits

The city council here approved two beer and liquor permits Tuesday night for local restaurants in Jennings.

LAKE CHARLES – Trailing by 19 points with just under a minute left to go in the third quarter of their Class B semi-final contest with Simsboro, the No. 3 Hathaway Hornets (HHS) were faced with two options. Let the game get away and sulk, or scrap their way back into it and try to continue their magical run. HHS Head Coach Eric Willis’ group of seniors decided they were going to ultimately fight back with tremendous passion, and nearly got the contest to a one possession game with 20 seconds left on the game clock The Hornets strung together a 24-10 run to slash in to Simsboro’s lead, however the dream fell short when the No. 2 Tigers hit two free throws in the final 15 seconds of the game to earn a 67-61 win.

State expands vaccine eligibility

Following a steady resupply of COVID-19 vaccine doses to the state and after a series of successful mass vaccination events, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Tuesday that Louisiana would expand eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine to everyone 16 and older with health conditions that makes them more likely to suffer a serious complication from COVID, based on federal health guidance. This change is effective immediately.
