The municipal election last Friday was a "bummer," and while it was generally a good natured contest, the spirit of rivalry ran high, and it was pronounced the hottest election since the birth of Jennings. The three-cornered mayoralty contest became much closer than had been anticipated by the average voter. John H. Roberts is mayor.

School board skeptical of HB 199

Jeff Davis Parish School Board members have expressed skepticism at the idea behind HB 199, a proposed constitutional amendment that would centralize local sales and use tax collection to a state level.

The bill passed the House Ways and Means Committee 14-1 Tuesday and is moving on to the Senate, said board tax administrator Amber Hymel. It would need to pass the Senate before being put before voters in 2022.

Philip and the Queen: A love story like no other

The first person I thought when I heard that Prince Philip had died was Elizabeth, a Queen in the greater world but only and always a wife to the man who’d been by her side for longer than I’ve been alive.

The second thing I thought that Harry and Meghan better stay in L.A. and not show their “respects” to the grieving monarch.

You can never imagine what conversations you will overhear or be involved in at a grocery store. Aside from the task of fighting crowds and cursing the price of every item you need, there’s always some person who makes your shopping experience interesting. It could be that parent that continuously screams at a child until you want to run them over with your buggy. It might be the lady in front of you at the cash register who can’t comprehend why a coupon will not be accepted.

Obviously, the Democrats are playing a dangerous and dishonest game with threats to pack the Supreme Court with an activist majority. It would seem to me that should they do so, the GOP would simply be forced to reverse the effort when the GOP regained a majority (assuming that Democrat current efforts to destroy election integrity ever allows a future change of power!).

Jennings Fire Chief Lisso Lawrence, who has been on sick leave since suffering a heart attack in May 1987, has submitted his resignation to Mayor Jennifer Meyer.

Meyer said Lawrence's resignation was submitted Wednesday and became effective the same day.

Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Deshotel, who has served as acting chief while Lawrence has been on sick leave, will continue in that slot until the chief's position is permanently filled, Meyer said.

Narrow Escape

Bert Perry, employed by the A.F. Derouen Hardware Company, had a very narrow escape from serious injury if not death yesterday when an acetylene gas machine in the rear of the store exploded.

A Kansas widower who got married again in two weeks after his wife died went out and tried to hush up the charivari crowd by telling them that they ought to be ashamed to make such noise around a house where a funeral had occurred so lately.

This is pretty near equal to the story of a fellow who killed both his father and mother and then pleaded for mercy on the ground that he was an orphan.

Save the Children Head Start recently held an easter bonnet contest for their students. An egg hunt was also held in Jennings and in Elton. The winners of the contests included the following:
