DOTD challenges municipalities to with litter

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is picking up what someone else is putting down - litter. And lots of it. DOTD recently implemented a new policy for field crews to pick up trash in the footprint where they’re working for the day. This has resulted in dozens of bags of litter and other debris cleared, even in small areas, on a daily basis. The campaign is called Take 10 and DOTD crews that are out on a site will take 10 minutes to pick up litter daily.

Broussard, Navarre combine to no-hit LA in 11-3 Hounds’ win

LAKE ARTHUR Landen Broussard and Cale Navarre combined to throw seven innings of no-hit baseball to earn the Welsh Greyhounds an 11-3 district 6-2A win over the Lake Arthur Tigers. The Hounds also pounded out nine hits in their victory. Broussard earned the victory on the mound by tossing four innings, allowed three runs on no hits and struck out seven. Navarre came in for the final three frames and didn’t allow a run or a hit and fanned five.

Cardinals pound ESA 14-4 to open district play

The Lacassine Cardinals opened district 7-B baseball action Monday by throttling Episcopal School of Acadiana (ESA) by a final of 14-4 at Legion Field in Jennings. The Cards pounded out 15 hits in the mercy-rule win that ended in the sixth, and rode the strong outing of senior Conner McKay on the mound. The Cardinals improved to 7-6 overall, and played ESA once again on Tuesday in a league game moved up due to the chance of possible weather today.

Easter wells are colorful, traditional decorations in Germany and Franconian Switzerland. The custom of Osterbrunnen, which started in the early 20th century, includes decorating public fountains and wells with Easter eggs. The tradition begins on Good Friday and continues until two weeks after Easter. According to the Bavarian tourism site www.bavaria.by, before the wells are decorated, they are first cleaned in a ceremony known as “Brunnen fegen,” which loosely translates to “sweeping the well.” Once cleansed, the well is dressed and decorated. The practice traces back to the belief in water as a life-giving force. Some infants are even baptized in the well’s water, and others drink the Easter water as a protection against illness.
