Prescott says calf injury not an issue as Cowboys enter bye

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dak Prescott promised not to miss any time after straining his right calf on the touchdown pass in overtime that gave the Dallas Cowboys their first win at New England since 1987.

The star quarterback believes he can deliver on that vow because the team is going into its open week. Even with the break, recent history with his teammates suggests Prescott’s view is optimistic.

LSU, Orgeron to part ways at end of season

(AP) — For Ed Orgeron, LSU’s Cajun coach, a dream job is coming to an end.

LSU and Orgeron have agreed to part ways after this season, 21 months after he coached the Tigers to a national championship with what is considered one of the greatest teams in college football history.

“I’m always gong to appreciate my time here my time here. I have no regrets,” Orgeron said while sitting next to athletic director Scott Woodward, who made the announcement at LSU’s Baton Rouge campus Sunday night.

DC suspends most of its Metro trains over safety issue

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington’s regional Metro system abruptly pulled more than half its fleet of trains from service early Monday morning over a lingering problem with the wheels and axles that caused a dramatic derailing last week. The ruling promises to complicate daily travel and commutes for thousands of riders for an unspecified length of time while the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the issue.

Data shows ship crossed over oil pipeline that ruptured

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A massive cargo ship that was supposed to be at anchor was buffeted by high winds during a January storm and repeatedly crossed over an undersea oil pipeline that later ruptured off the Southern California coast, according to vessel monitoring data.

US, Haiti seek release of 17 missionaries snatched by gang

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — American officials are working with Haitian authorities to try to secure the release of 12 adults and five children connected with a U.S.-based missionary group who were abducted over the weekend by a gang notorious for killings, kidnappings and extortion.

Police say the group was snatched Saturday by the 400 Mawozo gang in the community of Ganthier, which lies within the gang’s territory in the Croixdes-Bouquets area east of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

House leader: Ida housing help moving too slowly

BATON ROUGE (AP) — A Louisiana House leader offered blistering criticism Monday of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ temporary housing program for people with severe home damage from Hurricane Ida, slamming the effort as moving too slowly to assist suffering residents.

Though more than 1,000 trailers have been purchased, only a handful have been distributed to residents.

La. gators thrive, so farmers’ return quota may drop

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Onceendangered alligators are thriving in the wild, so Louisiana authorities are proposing a deep cut in the percentage that farmers must return to marshes where their eggs were laid.

“Over the past 50 years, alligator nest surveys have increased from an estimate of less than 10,000 in the 1970s and 1980s to well over 60,000 nests in recent years,” the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission said in a notice published Wednesday. “This increase in nesting has produced a population that can now be sustained with a much lower farm return rate.”

$205M is first deposit in state fund aimed at stability

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana collected enough business taxes during the last budget year to deposit the first $205 million into a never-used, five-year-old trust fund created to curb the state’s boom-and-bust cycles of budgeting.

The money may not be spent for years.

Fifty-four percent of voters agreed in 2016 to set up the Revenue Stabilization Trust Fund, to siphon off a portion of the state’s oil and gas revenue and corporate taxes when those collections are higher than usual.

Colin Powell dies, exemplary general stained by Iraq claims

WASHIINGTON (AP) — Colin Powell, who served Democratic and Republican presidents in war and peace but whose sterling reputation was forever stained by his faulty claims to justify the U.S. war in Iraq, died Monday of COVID-19 complications. He was 84.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Powell rose to the rank of four-star general and in 1989 became the first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In that role he oversaw the U.S. invasion of Panama and later the U.S. invasion of Kuwait to oust the Iraqi army in 1991.
